Rent The Runway wins praise in reviews for making event dressing effortless—wide style variety, helpful fit photos, and the two-size backup policy deliver many compliment-worthy looks—yet reliability wobbles with worn or smelly garments, tight inventory, plus-size gaps, and last‑minute shipping mishaps. The brand is good for weddings, galas, work trips, and maternity rotations, but inconsistent quality control and availability make time‑sensitive rentals risky.

I've used Rent the Runway a couple times to rent dresses as a wedding guest. It was an easy process and I appreciated that I could order two sizes in case one didn't fit. However, I frequently find the styles offered very "safe." I like to stand out and feel like I'm expressing a sense of style. The styles offered at RtR make me feel like I'm just fitting in.
I used the monthly service for a couple of months and really loved it! It just got to be too expensive for me. Never had any issues with the clothes and even thought about keeping some dresses!
I used this religiously when I attended school dances. My family found it to be the easiest and cheapest route to have nice dresses for special occasions. Especially considering that later on I might not even fit them anymore and that my style would change as I grew up.
I've been a customer on and off for a few years! The process has changed *a ton* due to covid and post covid inflation and supply chain challenges, plus their IPO-- I expected all that, but some of their policies can be a little less user friendly than they were in the RTR glory days (2018-2019). All in all, this is still an awesome way to experiment, discover new clothing brands and get a feel for how they fit you, and to purchase discounted clothing and accessories that you already know you love and fit/hold up well.
It’s a really smart concept and it definitely led the charge for similar services. The clothing on the site is so exciting and other services now offer items that are a little more “hip”

I really enjoyed rent the runway it’s a cute little company and a great idea and concept. Do not have to spend all of your money on clothes that you need just once anyway it’s very fun and I recommend anyone try their services. You won’t be disappointed.

I was a RTR unlimited member for 4 Years and have LOVED it and struggled with it. I love the idea and think the execution is really good. They are such innovators and the app and site are SO smooth. Delivery was also fairly consistent and fast in NYC for the past 3 yrs. I also really liked their drop boxes when those were open in WeWork. Additionally, renting clothes is much better for the environment than fast fashion so I appreciated being able to try many styles. I think I would sign up again if I had a series of weddings, parties, or formal work events to attend but would likely not rely on it for casual or day to day clothes.

High level- I feel like RTR over complicated itself and got too expensive- even as a fashion/shopping lover, I could not justify or keep up with my subscription. I started feeling frustrated about a couple things: - The clothes became so high end and out there fashion wise, that I struggled to find things that were my style or that I was confident would be my size. This happened more so over time and was a really reason that I ultimately canceled my membership. - They promoted so many great outfits for formal events and day to day on social and via email, but I often found it impossible to FIND those outfits when I actually needed them... trying to get a formal dress in a popular style for New Years? You are SOL because everyone else already got them! Same with a red dress on Valentines or a cute summer outfit during summer holidays. - You need to be really on top of your returns if you want to make the subscriptions worth it. I think if you live in a doorman building or by the stores, this is easy- but I found myself stressed and constantly working my schedule around RTR drop offs and UPS so I could rent what I needed in certain time frames. I LOVED the drop boxes in WeWork when we were in office- this made getting new items so easy and felt like I could exchange half my order and keep things I loved. However- there was so much drama with this- the boxes kept changing. Locations opened and closed- the lines were super long! Great innovation technique but ultimately was logistically a nightmare for them I imagine and created dissatisfaction with follow through from customers. Then my expectations were SO high and they just closed everything. - Ultimately I canceled my subscription because they changed the unlimited model from unlimited to a specific amount of swaps. Having already been stressed out about returns and making the subscription worth it- I knew I couldn't handle the new, kind of confusing, return timeframe and timetable based on the price I chose. I was also turned off by not being able to quickly return items that don't fit because this happens ALL the time with designer clothes.

I had a touch experience because I found that most of the "occasion" dresses didn't fit me well and I wasn't excited enough about the brands / availability of the everyday clothes. Love the concept and I wish it worked better for me!

I had a subscription back when it was unlimited closet. That was wild and completely worth it, especially when I had a ton of bachelorette and weddings to attend. Now their pricing is a little too steep for me. However, if I have a really fancy wedding, I look to rent!
A really great option for special occasions, so I don't have to buy a new thing that I'd barely wear. Returns are so easy, and I love that you don't have to worry about dry cleaning or anything like that!

Sometimes the sizing doesn't feel like it's on—I once got the monthly plan and got 4 items, and not a single thing fit.
Love the idea and the options, but the clothing doesn't really work for my body type since I always need to adjust formal dresses I purchase. I do love their NY sample sale and go whenever it happens, so I'm glad about the options and opportunity to try on clothing before purchasing!
Pre-pandemic, I would use rent the runway unlimited for 2-3 months in the year when I knew I had a lot of events to attend. Living near the flagship store made it super fun and easy to try out the brand. I also loved the ease of buying something that I had already rented, tried, and loved, instead of buying a "new" item.

I have not tried it since the pandemic given the lack of reason to do so, I am excited to find a reason to try their new and updated format. I would probably not love it as much if I didn't have the opportunity to go to a store in-person.
Have been a subscriber for the past year and truly loved my experience. The customer service is kind and super responsive, their selection is impressive and ships to me same day within NYC! Over time, RTR has narrowed in on my sizing super well and I've been impressed with how they can recommend clothes that actually fit me.
Feedback
I would love to learn more about RTR's sustainability standards/processes. I've also found that sometimes in higher demand periods the selection of clothes actually available to rent can be quite low.
Must-have for working in office and going to so many events.

Wish they still had unlimited!
They are my go-to when I need a dress for a wedding or special event. I have been using them for over 4 years. Before the pandemic, I even used their subscription plan for a few months but stopped since I had nowhere to go when we were in quarantine. Highly recommend if you are looking for a wedding dress. They have a great selection and I love how they let you order two dresses so if you aren't sure which size would be best, you have options. Easy to send back as well.
I was formerly a Rent the Runway campus ambassador and loved switching up my dresses for formals and events through RTR's great service. Clothes always arrived clean and ready to wear, and I appreciate RTR's emphasis on stocking statement pieces that one normally would shy away from investing in — this is exactly how renting should be!

I haven't used RTR in the last few years so not sure if anything's changed since I last used it...
This place is so cool when you’re on a budget!
I used to do the unlimited when it was like $100 a month and then when it went up it wasn’t worth it anymore because they changed all the subscriptions, so there was no more unlimited swaps of 4 items a month
