  • Extensive selection for special events
  • Convenient two-size backup policy
  • Helpful user photos and reviews
  • Stylish maternity rental options
  • Inconsistent garment cleaning quality
  • Limited inclusive plus-size assortment
  • Occasional worn, fraying inventory
  • Unreliable time-sensitive order fulfillment

Rent The Runway wins praise in reviews for making event dressing effortless—wide style variety, helpful fit photos, and the two-size backup policy deliver many compliment-worthy looks—yet reliability wobbles with worn or smelly garments, tight inventory, plus-size gaps, and last‑minute shipping mishaps. The brand is good for weddings, galas, work trips, and maternity rotations, but inconsistent quality control and availability make time‑sensitive rentals risky.

  • I have rented several dresses from RTR. I love that they provide and extra size, and alternative style. I found the process to be simple and have generally had a good experience.

    Feedback

Read the reviews carefully to ensure a good fit. Sometimes it feels a bit risky to rent a dress for a special occasion, so I usually go with brands that tim familiar with the size and quality of.

  • I liked the dress that I rented for a wedding. It made it much easier than shopping for a dress. Sometimes the selection can seem a bit limited.

Expand into more high end brands and novel styles

  • I have been using Rent the Runway for years, and now I cannot live without it. I am *literally* hooked, because without it I would have no clothes. I have become deeply dependent on it - which is totally the point! I started to work with this brand in college and their crash courses made me fall in love with the brand. I love their ethos, I love their branding, I love what they stand for. I am such an authentic spokesperson for this company.

RTR could use more youthful brands, more high end brands and I would love them to bring back their unlimited program.

  • Overall I think think this is a great concept and product but it may not be for everyone. I love to buy and try new clothes because it gives me something to look forward to and it makes me feel like I’m good about myself to dress well. Rent the Runway allows you to rent nice designer clothing for a fraction of the price of buying but I think the real reason I keep coming back to it is the reviews. You can read real reviews and see photos of people wearing the clothes IRL to get a better understanding of how things look and fit. To me this is invaluable because the model pictures on company websites keep getting worse and worse (you can barely see the actual clothing these days). I also think RTR does a great job of bringing in cute new on trend items. I have both subscribed to the monthly rental service and one time rental both with great success. I’ve rented clothes and accessories for work, weddings, camping, dinners, beach days, and a million other things.

I will gladly give RTR 5 stars when the improve the following: - extended sizes including petite and tall sizes - better quality control —sometimes i get things that are too worn and should have been taken out of rotation - easier cancellation (you have to email or call)

  • I've done both one-time rentals and their rental membership - both are fantastic. One-time rentals are easy - they will send an additional size to make sure you have the perfect fit, and it's easy to receive & send back . The membership is also great - you can receive various high quality, luxury pieces once or multiple times a month and it's super easy to return them (I even had someone pick it up directly from my apartment complex). The pieces are great and very high quality and it's easy to get a sense of how something will look based on the photos but also the fit reviews from other members.

  • I love the concept of this company. I am a small fat person (size 16/18) and I found it VERY hard to find things that were both in stock and would fit me and look flattering. I work from home so I've only subscribed to RTR when I needed clothes for an event and couldn't go shopping for whatever reason (time/transportation/lack of options in my area, etc) It's a great option to try out designer things that I otherwise wouldn't be able to access, and the concept of test driving articles of clothing is pretty cool. I just wish it was easier for them to be plus size friendly.

  • I have had some great experiences with RTR, but as of late, the product offerings have been bleak. When looking for dress options to wear for weddings, I was disappointed by the lack of suitable choices in my size (and I prepared by looking months in advance to secure a style). For the price of the rental, I've pulled back and started looking elsewhere for outfits that I actually love (and know I will wear again).

    Improved product assortment

  • I was attending a wedding in Palm Springs and didn't really have anything to wear for the occasion, and didn't want to buy anything so it seemed like the right time to visit RTR. I don't know if it was because it was a first time use but I was able to order two sizes in the main dress I wanted which was amazing because the smaller size did NOT fit. I loved that I didn't have a dress I'd never wear again sitting in my closet. The whole process was very easy, with little to no effort on my part. I would absolutely utilize this again, probably only for weddings.

I do wish they had some wider selections of certain brands, but I understand that's not always possible.

  • Love the novelty of getting new clothes in the mail, and the subscription is very fun. It's especially great for rotating through big-ticket items like outerwear. The user reviews are also very helpful.

    Feedback

Most clothes are in good shape, although I did receive certain things that showed signs of wear. Sometimes the selections were limited and options I wanted to try were consistently unavailable. It was disappointing to receive clothes that were unflattering or didn't fit.

  • Was an early adopter of RTR back in 2010. It was a dream brand then... amazing customer service, access to super cute, trendy, special occasion dresses that were perfect. When they grew, I tried the Unlimited subscription for a few months during a time when there were many weddings, business events, travel opportunities. Although there were some hiccups in swapping items (it took forever to get a new piece), the value was still better than going out to buy new clothing. Today, I guess now after 10 years, the RTR experience is barely recognizable to me. It's difficult to access the best pieces, there are too many crap items on the website to sift through, and Unlimited is not worth the money. Customer service is impersonal and sometimes completely incompetent. Although I will say that the reusable garment bag has been improved quite a lot!

Better customer service, smarter and more personalized database of items, faster returns/swaps.

  • I’ve tried RTR for my prom and another formal event. RTR is great for a one-time use clothing event and for people who are sizes 0-10. Anything above that, there’s not as much to choose from and not as many fit reviews or photos to see if the clothes will work. I do like how they allow you borrow a few sizes, just in case one doesn’t work, but there can be more sizes offered.

  • Love the concept and the different options for renting (occasion/monthly.ect) Renting for one occasion is great. They have a lot of great high end options, with a lot of items in stock. However, I found the monthly service rental not to be as worth it. The items were very worn, and a lot of the newer items were never in stock. I felt like I would just be picking something to pick something?

    Good customer service.

  • Such a great concept and I used to swear by their Unlimited membership, but over the last year or so their inventory availability has gotten significantly worse while the price has increased. Debatable if its still worth it.

  • Absolutely adore Rent the Runway! I've been using their services for years now and they've saved me so many times. Whenever I'm back in NYC and need a dress for a fancy event, I know I can always count on Rent the Runway to have a wide range of sizes and styles to choose from. I love that they have so many options to choose from and that they make it easy to try new styles without committing to a full purchase. 💃🏼 I also appreciate that they are environmentally conscious and are working towards using more sustainable materials in their clothing. I'll definitely be using Rent the Runway again in the future! 🙌🏼

  • I didn't like the clothes and the process. Everything that I like was always not avail

  • Love rtw. Perfect for special occasions. Couldn’t be easier to use and return. Love that you get two sizes to make sure it fits!

  • Used to be that you could have access to a ton of clothes and dresses, but the depth of stock for each item seems to have thinned over time. Lots of time the item I want to rent is out of stock for weeks around my event date - and it doesn't feel like me being late to rent, rather I look across items and dates and find limited stock. Usually I just end up buying items because renting from here doesn't get me the item I want to try.

    deeper stock of individual items.

  • I’ve been a Rent the Runway member for almost 7 years. This business has saved me some real $$$s & helped elevate my personal and professional style. The new plan isn’t my favorite so I hope there are more plans and perks that’ll be added in the future.

More efficient return options. Slightly better structured plans.

  • So I just hit my one-year “anniversary” working a customer service job at Rent the Runway. Whenever friends or family ask if they should use Rent the Runway, I tell them to run as fast as they can. The whole thing is a grift. Let’s pretend the clothes arrive clean, in good condition, and on time—which they often don’t. Even if they did, the inventory is an absolute joke. The last time I logged onto the website they only had 20 ugly purses available, for example. And all of them looked cheaper than something you could find at Target. There should be at least 200 bags. Jewelry is nonexistent and cheap looking. Most of the clothes look like Walmart clearance bin rejects—not even nice Walmart stuff, just the crap no one wanted. The “runway” in Rent the Runway is a straight-up lie. Maybe you’ll see a few old Diane von Furstenberg pieces, but most are unrecognizable names. Forget Gucci, Prada, or any actual luxury brands. Even when I scroll through the listings, maybe 1 in 20 things are remotely cute—and that’s being generous. The rest is bottom-barrel junk. On top of that, they rarely rotate their inventory. I’ve seen the same tired, ugly clothes listed since I started one year ago. And if you do find something you like? Good luck—it’s probably unavailable. Everything cute is always out of stock, so you’re stuck picking through leftovers that look like they came from a thrift store bin. And speaking of thrift stores—let’s talk condition. Half the clothes show up wrinkled, reeking of BO, or even cigarette smoke. Some are ripped, stretched out, or stained. Customers constantly call in complaining about receiving filthy, damaged items. We’re required to lie and say all items go through an “extensive cleaning process.” Total BS. I wouldn’t be surprised if half the stuff is just pulled from the return bag and stuffed into a new one with zero inspection and without getting cleaned at all. Nothing about it feels hygienic or quality-controlled. Next issue: shipping. There are two types of orders: memberships (monthly rentals) and one-time rentals (for events like weddings or galas). One-time rentals are especially risky. I’d say at least 30–50% of the time, the item shows up late—or not at all. We ship with UPS, so delays happen constantly, plus inventory issues where the item won’t be available and the customer only finds out the day before. Items get lost, arrive after the event, or get delivered to the hotel after the customer has already checked out. Even with memberships, delays and missing packages are daily occurrences. I talk to customers who ordered a week in advance for a trip, and nothing shows up. And while we blame UPS, the truth is: Rent the Runway has never figured out a reliable logistics system. Let’s be real: you’d be better off going to Goodwill. At least there, you can try stuff on, know it fits, and keep it. The quality would be the same—or better—and it won’t smell like armpits or cigarettes. And fit is a whole other mess. If something doesn’t fit, the customer has to go through a “fit exchange,” which means waiting even longer and hoping the replacement fits better—which it usually doesn’t. It’s a logistical nightmare that isn’t worth the effort. Back in March, the company promised they were “doubling inventory” and adding “new designers.” Total lie. I just checked the site—same old crap. Two pages of shirts, max. Nothing new, nothing special. And honestly? I think they’re going under. They went public a couple years ago and have since lost 90% of their stock value. We’re losing customers like crazy. I’d estimate 80% of my calls are people canceling because they’re sick of getting late, smelly, worn-out clothes. So yeah. Scam company. Miserable job. Dumpster-fire business model. And a billionaire CEO who clearly couldn’t care less.

  • Started using it for work/everyday clothes. The quality felt premium and the shipping took only 2 days. I like how I can swap items that I don't want to keep mid month without having to wait a whole month. I live in a studio with limited closet space, so this works perfect for me. Also I don't have to worry about clothes not fitting me as my body weight fluctuates throughout the year. I recently tried Nuuly as well but I think RTR currently offers the best rental experience in the market.
