Reviews mention

  • Minimalist aesthetic packaging
  • Lightly scented personal-care essentials
  • Reliable cleaning product performance
  • Comfortable, ergonomic wooden utensils
  • Controversial mandatory membership model
  • Inconsistent product quality control
  • Watery shampoo and thin formulas
  • Weak candle scent longevity

Public Goods earns mixed reviews: many praise the clean, minimalist design and effective basics—from ramen and dish soap to shampoo and stoneware—while recurring complaints target the mandatory $79 membership model and inconsistent quality (leaky refills, watery shampoos, weak candles). Reviews indicate the brand works for aesthetically cohesive, lightly scented, non-toxic essentials, but buyers wary of subscriptions, plastic in refills, occasional stockouts, and hit‑or‑miss formulas should proceed selectively.

  • I signed up for this when they were offering lifetime memberships as a way to gather investment. Their shampoo and conditioner are nice enough. I believed in the concept as a whole, but I do think I prefer buying individual products from specific places - verify my own needs are met etc. I have not found enough value to continue to come back and order more from them.

  • Their dish soap smells amazing; it literally smells like Sweettarts and it is really effective to.

  • I ordered a bunch of cleaning products and dishes during my recent move and I’m very impressed but the products. The quality is great and the shipping is fast. You receive a 14 day trial before paying $79 annually for access. I forgot to cancel in time, so I’ll continue to use the service for the next year. I’m excited to try more of the pantry staples

  • I love the price point and quality of products. I have ordered a few pantry staples over time and have been satisfied with the quality, specially given the price. I gifted a friend the herb grow kit and it has delivered spectacularly!

I worry about the packaging and shipping carbon footprint for regular grocery and pantry items.

  • I actually really enjoy this brand because it is minimal and very well designed to make your whole house cohesive, I just wish I didn’t have to have a membership in order to purchase something from them

  • I tried the membership trial and genuinely liked the products, however I hate their business model and for that reason will not be buying from them again unless it changes. I do not want to have to pay for a membership just to have access to single-branded, limited variety options. It just doesn't make sense to me. If they were to lose the membership and allow consumers to purchase their products just like any other regular online store then there are definitely a few products that I would repurchase regularly.

  • Generally it was all fine. Nothing spectacular, not bad. Just not differentiated enough to justify the subscription cost for us.

  • Overall, their products were what I was looking for in terms of healthy ingredients and sustainable materials. I got their travel sized toiletry set that came in handy when I was traveling overseas. I also purchased their glass tea kettle but the strainer broke. I contacted customer service and they sent a replacement at no charge. Unfortunately, that one also broke.

Great customer service but products not always the best.

  • Clean design and good range of products, but some are low quality and seem worthy of the price tag.

some of the hardware is cheaply made and you get what you pay for. I was washing my funnel set and they immediately bent. these will not last very long.

  • I really like the accessible price points this brand has to offer for their low-waste products. Their original subscription platform wasn't for me, but I've been able to purchase their products through other stores that carry them IRL. I mostly have their cotton produce bags, travel toiletries, and a great tote for the farmers market. I purchased from them pretty early on and it looks like they're carrying more home products.

  • I've always had a great experience with Public Goods personal care products. I've tried the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. My kids like the products too, which is a bonus! The products are genuinely affordable and no-nonsense. I enjoy the simplicity of Public Goods branding.

The natural sponge was tiny and split apart after a week of using! Would love a larger option.

  • Great line of products. I was introduced to them through a podcast. I already have so many subscriptions so I didn't join the membership but their salsa and popcorn is SOOOO GOOD! I truly would go back just to purchase those two again!

  • I've been with them since backing on Kickstarter years ago. High quality products, they're consistently adding new lines, and it's affordable and sustainable. Almost everything I've tried of theirs is a winner, and I'm always looking forward to what they add next.

Wish the free shipping limit was a little lower, but I get it - shipping costs money and I accept that.

  • I love this company. Products are clean with largly sustainable packaging. Try the ramen!

  • I like the design and how it looks, it smells good, but i have had better ones. Whatever the prive is affordable so for the price is good.

  • I have been a member of Public Goods since they launched their Kickstarter years ago, and I have a lifetime membership. All in all, they are okay. I like the idea of buying direct and not having them charge more than what the products cost to make. However, their selection and shipping times need work. You have to buy a certain amount before getting free shipping, and the shipping takes longer than I would like. The products they sell are great, I believe it's just the service itself that needs work.

  • I like their food and their personal care products. I just think that the brand is way too expensive for what it is.

There are better, cheaper products out there. I would recommend that you buy from multiple different brands instead of buying everything from just one brand.

  • I have tried several public goods products over the years and I have found their fragerances to be soft as well as the clean factor (for shampoos, soaps, and other cleansing products). They are not my favorite brand as they seem a little plain jane when it comes to hygiene products (lotions, body washes, etc.)

  • The solidcore studio I belong to always has the deoderant and hand lotion in the bathrooms. There has been several occasions that I have been running around before class and needed to reapply deoderant but forget it in my gym bag. Each time I've used the public goods one it has kept my clean and dry through the entire class with zero irritation. The lotion works really well too. The price point is excellent as well. I'm going to order a few products soon when I need to restock some personal care items.

  • We’ve been public goods members since they crowdfunded, and we have tried maybe 50 different products since then. On the plus side, the company’s mission of minimalist packaging and branding just makes sense. If a product like this works for us and is affordable, why not choose that? The products have been a little hit or miss to be honest, but as the company has matured the products have also improved. They have also become more expensive (of course — what hasn’t), sometimes to the point where we choose conventional alternatives out of necessity. I’ll call out the reviews on PG’s site as exemplary in practice. As far as I can tell, they are posted exactly as they come in. It’s easy to get a good idea of what others think of products. Standout products for us over time have been the cleaning products and the high quality refillable spray bottles and the facial cleanser (perfect for men with oily skin). We recently ordered a plant from the new line of plants to give as a gift, and it was in great condition. Food products generally haven’t been impressive.
