Van Leeuwen reviews and discussion

4.5

Reviews mention

  • Ultra-creamy texture ice cream
  • Inventive, distinctive flavor lineup
  • Impressive vegan options parity
  • High-quality, rich ingredients
  • Inconsistent flavor execution reports
  • Occasional odd aftertaste flavors
  • Sparse honeycomb mix-ins
  • Negative in-store service experience

Van Leeuwen earns strong reviews for ultra‑creamy textures, imaginative flavors, and standout signatures like Honeycomb, Earl Grey, and Sicilian Pistachio, indicating the brand is very good and often a favorite. Reviews also flag inconsistencies—some flavors miss the mark, a few non-dairy pints divide taste, and at least one scoop shop experience cites rude service and unavailable items—so it excels on flavor and variety but can falter on consistency and in‑store experience.

  • Van leeuwen has impressed me lately. It has become pretty ubiquitous but I appreciate their flavors and the quality is undeniable. This vanilla goes head to head with haagen dazs which has been my old faithful for years.

  • I went to Van Leeuwen on 96th street and Madison ave and let me tell you never go there again. The employees are awful, rude, and obnoxious. I was waiting in line for fro-yo which had a huge sign outside, to be told that there was no fro-yo left after waiting 20 mins!! I was also the only one in line but they were to busy making a 2nd batch of waffle cones nobody had ordered. Anyways when we were walking out I said maybe you should write a sign telling everyone there is no fro-yo left. Instead of saying thank you for the helpful idea we got dismissed from Van Leeuwen very very rudely. If anyone is looking for good ice cream in the city with real NICE employees near Van Leeuwen go to GLACE ice cream!

  • I LOVE VAN LEEUWEN. I just moved to New York and went out in the Village with a friend of mine, we stopped for a treat and it was so refreshing in the heat and was SO good. The earl grey is PHENOMENAL.

  • Absolute dreamboat! I waited for oat milk nice cream bars to come to the US after I fell in love Abbott Kinney in the EU. These bars do not disappoint. They are my summer treat and something I look forward to.

  • I’ve tried 2 flavors so far, the honeycomb and the pistachio. Both are delicious!! I’ve gone back and bought the honeycomb several times. One of my favorites.

  • I don’t believe ice cream made with milk alternatives until I had Van Lewen. I don’t even pay attention to the dairy component, their flavors are out of this world. Love the colorful packaging.

  • Van Leeuwen just came to DC & they are my new favorite ice cream place. Their branding is great, their merch is cute, & the ice cream is delicious. My favorite flavor is honeycomb and I am obsessed with my new DC tote!

  • I buy pints at Sprouts for around $7, I'm not vegan and didn't know that they had vegan options or shops until reading it here but the pints of Snickerdoodle ice cream are SO GOOD!

  • I love buying their ice cream in the store and at their scoop shops! Great variety of flavors and great ingredients!

  • Van Leeuwen is SO good! I get it every time I go to NY. I love that you can now purchase pints in most major grocery stores. The in-person experience will always be better, but in a pinch, the pints are super tasty. I really hope they open a store in Northern California!

  • Van Leeuwen ice cream is absolutely decadent—ultra creamy, rich, and full of bold, creative flavors. Whether it’s their classic dairy or vegan options, every pint feels like a premium dessert experience. The ingredients are top-notch, and even the more unique flavors totally deliver. It’s indulgent in the best way possible. Five stars for quality, taste, and originality—this is ice cream done right!

  • One of the best ice cream chains. Never disappointed. Hard to pick a favorite but anything coffee or brownie is commonly my go to.

  • I really hate the price, I mean almost $7 for one scoop of hard ice cream, but they have such unique flavors! I would not say it is not worth it or bad, it is just not an ice cream I have everyday or frequently, only when I am out in the city and want to treat myself.

  • Absolutely rice and decadent! I haven't tried any flavor I don't like. The store can be packed from time to time but definitely worth the wait and price!

  • Absolutely delicious! My first flavor was Passion Fruit Berry Pop from the Keith Haring collaboration and really enjoyed. Excited to start trying other flavors on my end.

  • Ever since I moved to Brooklyn I became a Van Leeuwen girl. Stopping into a store is always a treat myself moment - my go-to flavors are Earl Grey and the Honeycomb. When at the grocery store, I don't even consider buying another pint brand.

  • The flavors are unique and flavorful but the price point can be a bit high.

  • I love their imaginative flavors! I'm trying to cut back on dairy for environmental reasons so really appreciate their vegan options!

  • They are absolutely delicious. I'm a basic chocolate lover, and the texture of this ice cream has not been matched - at least at the in person shop. A worthy treat!
