Reviews mention

  • Personalized, targeted formulations
  • Lightweight, effective shampoo
  • Softening, detangling conditioner
  • Transformative curl cream performance
  • Inconsistent formula performance
  • Occasional scalp irritation reports
  • Scent intensity divisive
  • Potentially drying or heavy feel

Prose earns strong reviews for its personalized hair and skincare that often deliver softer, shinier, more manageable hair and calmer, hydrated skin, with many noting reduced frizz, cleaner-feeling scalps, and bouncier curls—especially with the Pre‑Shampoo Scalp Mask, Custom Shampoo/Conditioner, and Curl Cream. However, reviews also report misses: formulas that feel heavy or drying, minimal results versus drugstore options, scent sensitivity, and recurring complaints about subscription management; some users even cite increased shedding or irritation.

  • I appreciated the individuality of this product. I used the shampoo and conditioner and felt it worked as well as other brands I have tried. I do think it’s a bit pricey for a shampoo and conditioner.

  • Prose is a good product . I have noticed that it doesn’t always leave my hair feeling clean. I use it as an alternative to some of my other shampoo products! I would recommend trying the Prose products because perhaps they will work differently on other people.

  • I really wanted to love this because the idea of customized hair care is brilliant. I ordered a custom shampoo and conditioner and it came with a hair mask as well. I just didn’t feel like my hair loved it. It didn’t give me the silky smoothness, I was hoping for and didn’t seem to moisturize my hair either. Sad to give it only 3 stars.

  • I used prose for a few years and used to be a die-hard fan, but tbh now I don't understand why I liked it so much. the scents don't smell amazing and I didn't feel like there was THAT much personalization. I felt like the formula they sent me was basically the same regardless of what I set my hair goals to be, and I eventually stopped using it because it was SO expensive 😭

  • I've been using Prose for about 3 years and recently decided to cancel. In the beginning I really liked their products, but over time it feels like the quality has decreased. The products don't work as well with my hair anymore. They also switched their subscription to sending automatically. They used to send an email before your next order was sent giving you the opportunity to pause it or change it, and then about a year in they just started charging and sending automatically, which as a subscription is super annoying and poor customer service in my opinion.

  • Loved the idea of a custom haircare formula but I didn’t get great results. My hair wasn’t any softer even with the hair mask, and though it smelled great, felt like it worked similar to other mainstream shampoo brands.

  • I've been a loyal user of Prose shampoo, conditioner, and dry shampoo for well over 4 years. I love that I can customize it exactly to my needs and since I started choosing the silicone free option about a year ago, my hair dresser has noticed a crazy difference in my new hair growth. also the Botanica scent is AMAZING. I also like that they offer lavender shampoo to gently keep my hair toned how I like it. I also like for environmental reasons how the dry shampoo is non-aerosol and that I can re-use my pumps. The downside of Prose is their TERRIBLE website capabilities, which have never improved as long as I've been a user. Not only do you have to get a link emailed to you in order to login every time you got to the site, but I have had to contact customer service countless times (which they have always accommodated me) to fix my subscription cadence. The limitations of the website do not allow you to easily choose which products you need on which dates. If you ever need to change a date, who KNOWS when you'll be getting the products following that change. It's extremely frustrating that you can't choose or see the exact dates you want to receive products. I'm honestly getting angry writing this.... but I'm sure I am not alone in the way I use up products at different rates, so I don't need all of them shipped together in the same orders, and you should be able to get specific about that.

  • I'm a sucker for a good quiz, but was very impressed with the outcome! It's on par with other good haircare products I've used, but I appreciate that the shampoo lasts longer than I expected and the fragrances are fantastic. Dry shampoo was meh for me.

  • I love the concept of this brand. Unfortunately, this made my thin hair feel heavy. The formula didn't work for me. Packaging was great, and branding is lovely and simple.

  • Saw zero changes after regular use for over a year. Ended up canceling the subscription because it starting feeling like a chore to receive and unpack them, knowing I wasn't enjoying the experience or seeing any benefit.

  • Unfortunately this didn't work for me. My hair looked and felt awful using this. I really wanted to love it. The concept sounds really great.

  • I purchased Prose as a gift for my mom. She reported that the shampoo and conditioner were "just okay." Fine, but not worth it to continue with the brand, although she really enjoyed the concept and said the products smelled good.

  • I decided to give Prose a try after coming of years not feeling that I was using the right hair care products. I could notice the difference on the first washes. I have been using Prose every since.

  • Prose was just okay for me. In my opinion it wasn’t with the money. I enjoyed the fragrance options and liked the curl cream, but I didn’t use enough of everything to be on a subscription. They would charge my card and I would have multiple products at once.

  • The website is super sleek with a quiz to gather many different data point but I tried the shampoo and conditioner for a few months and it didn't make my hair better. I started to use pantene and it worked wonders. Prose isn't worth it. It's more of a gimmick

  • I had very high hopes for Prose, but am quite disappointed. The shampoo left my scalp in not great condition - worse than before - and had my hair getting greasy the next day, which I haven't had for years. The dry shampoo didn't really work well to fix this. The shampoo had a delightful scent, but it wasn't very strong, and the shampoo itself didn't lather up well, so I would end up using too much because of this. Overall, I love the idea of a personalized product, but this one just doesn't deliver.

  • Mixed! I've tried the shampoos and conditioners several times and never been impressed. The curl cream and gel were definitely pretty good though!

  • This is the only shower routine that genuinely makes my hair feel and look different. Made the switch from Verb and though the price point seems significantly higher, for someone who rarely washes their hair (1-2x per week) one shipment can last me 3-4 months. I love the scent, packaging + branded experience. My hair feels lighter, softer and silkier – which is absolutely in line with my needs.

Skip the dry shampoo, and find a cheaper hair mask elsewhere. The add ons aren't worth it for me.

  • I felt this product was a little gimmick-y. The quiz is fun to take, but I'm not sure its really all that tailored to my needs. I didn't notice a huge difference when I started using it (I tested it for about a year to make sure I was giving the product a fair shot), and have since switched to different products. The scent of the product is very nice.

I was disappointed they used plastic bottles, as the price is high enough to warrant glass or aluminum - which is much easier to recycle and less wasteful.

  • I tried this before switching to Olaplex and I liked the products enough but the price vs how frequently you had to restock yourself just didn't feel quite worth it. It definitely seemed like it was "Custom" insofar as they have a product range that already exists and they assign you one based on your answers to their questions. Its not a bad thing, per se, but I don't think it felt properly "custom" to me. I mostly felt like I was paying a premium for a label with my name on it.

Perhaps an introductory sample product someone could purchase at a lower price would help consumers to decide if this is right for them or not.
