Reviews mention

  • Luxurious personalized packaging
  • Customizable elegant fragrances
  • Detailed tailoring questionnaire
  • Noticeably softer, shinier hair
  • Inconsistent curl definition
  • Occasional drying formulas
  • Lightweight, underpowered conditioner
  • Potential scalp irritation/shedding

Prose earns strong reviews for customized hair and skincare that often deliver softer, cleaner-feeling hair, reduced frizz, easier detangling, defined curls, and healthier-feeling scalps; however, results vary, with some users reporting dryness, greasiness, or even increased shedding. Reviewers praise the detailed quiz, personalized scents, and luxe, name-printed packaging, while noting inconsistent curl performance, lightweight conditioners that can feel insufficient, and formulas that don’t always outperform standard products.

  • This is the only shower routine that genuinely makes my hair feel and look different. Made the switch from Verb and though the price point seems significantly higher, for someone who rarely washes their hair (1-2x per week) one shipment can last me 3-4 months. I love the scent, packaging + branded experience. My hair feels lighter, softer and silkier – which is absolutely in line with my needs.

    Feedback

Skip the dry shampoo, and find a cheaper hair mask elsewhere. The add ons aren't worth it for me.

  • I felt this product was a little gimmick-y. The quiz is fun to take, but I'm not sure its really all that tailored to my needs. I didn't notice a huge difference when I started using it (I tested it for about a year to make sure I was giving the product a fair shot), and have since switched to different products. The scent of the product is very nice.

I was disappointed they used plastic bottles, as the price is high enough to warrant glass or aluminum - which is much easier to recycle and less wasteful.

  • I tried this before switching to Olaplex and I liked the products enough but the price vs how frequently you had to restock yourself just didn't feel quite worth it. It definitely seemed like it was "Custom" insofar as they have a product range that already exists and they assign you one based on your answers to their questions. Its not a bad thing, per se, but I don't think it felt properly "custom" to me. I mostly felt like I was paying a premium for a label with my name on it.

Perhaps an introductory sample product someone could purchase at a lower price would help consumers to decide if this is right for them or not.

  • it’s a great concept but even though the products are customized to my needs, i feel like the formula didn’t do it’s job. my hair felt oily and not conditioned the way it feels after i use other high quality stylist recommended products.

improve the formulas to live up to the UX and packaging.

  • Quick shipping and fun unboxing experience and packaging. A brand I wanted to support and love, but the formula fell short. It didn't feel as premium as it looked, particularly when it came to the conditioner and scent. The conditioner was runny and didn't leave my hair coated and moisturized post wash- off. The scent was mehh, it needed a stronger profile IMO. After all hair care is a a sensorial experience. On the plus side, returning and getting my money back was smooth and straightforward.

Work on the conditioner formula and scent profiles!

  • For a brand that promises your perfect hair through customization, my hair was alright. There are brands where I don't have access to customize at all (like the brand just sold shampoo and conditioner--no variation for dry scalp or anything) and they provide me with better hair for a cheaper price.

Honestly, I think the biggest turn off it just how long it takes for it to get to you. For example, you could wait a month for you to get your products only to realize that you don't like it. And then when you ask to re-customize it, you wait another month. Brands like Function--which do a similar thing like Prose--can now be sold at Target, I don't know why it takes this brand so long to make their formula. Hence, I think some more transparency about how the product is made would be helpful .

  • When I first heard of the brand I was so excited, I thought it was an incredibly and inclusive concept but I was ultimately unimpressed by the products and formulations. While better than the usual drug store line-up, I didn't feel that Prose was as "personalized" as they claimed. After a few weeks of use, my normally curly hair was less frizzy but much more flat. When using Prose, I found my texture to change completely and the pre-mask left my roots slicked and oily. I will say that with my friends who have naturally straight hair, they couldn't stop raving about Prose - so it could have been a texture issue.

    Feedback

The customer experience was wonderful, but I do think that the formulations (particularly for mixed texture or curly hair) could use some refinement.

  • Got the shampoo and conditioner. I didn't really notice any positive difference in my hair.

  • Using their shampoo and conditioner was not a nice experience. Shampoo felt like washing my hair with grease that wouldn't wash off and the conditioner was thin. The end result was limp, greasy hair. I tried it for over a week, thinking maybe my hair will adjust, but nope, just felt gross all week and threw it out.

    Feedback

Not sure if there's tweaking to the formula supposedly customized for me that would make it work better.

  • I have been hit with so many targeted ads for Prose and finally caved and tried it. I really love what this does to my wavey hair, really bringing out the texture and reducing the frizz. Personally, I love the smell of the product and it does last longer on my hair than other hair products.

    Feedback

The bottles are very small which makes the packaging super wasteful. With the company pushing their sustainable angle, they should offer refill bags and push their customer to reuse the plastic bottles.

  • The idea of hyper-custom shampoo is great. But the product didn't live up to the hype at all. I had to stop using the shampoo because my hair never felt clean with it. The pre-shampoo mask didn't seem to do anything. The only product I somewhat liked was the conditioner. But it was so thick and oily I could only use it sparingly on the very ends of my hair. Overall, definitely not worth the money.

  • I thought it was a really great idea! It was fun to get custom items in a space that isn't usually customized. The smells are all great and I do love that it's sustainable. Reusing the pump is a great idea.

    Feedback

I didn't notice a significant difference from using big brand products but I wouldn't say that I would never try the subscription again.

  • I liked the customization element, it forced me to really think critically about the issues I wanted to solve with my hair.

    Feedback

I was shocked by how small the bottle was when it arrived based on the high price point. Frankly, I didn't see any major differences in my hair after using the products consistently, and it felt gimmicky.

  • Love everything about this brand and it’s sustainability efforts in clean ingredients making the usual every day products with harmful chemicals obsolete! Giving consumers an affordable way to help our environment!

  • Prose has completely revolutionized my hair care routine. I’ve never had a shampoo and conditioner that felt so perfectly suited to my hair's needs. After completing the personalized quiz, I received products that target my specific hair concerns, and the results have been incredible—my hair is shinier, softer, and more manageable. I love that Prose uses high-quality ingredients and their focus on customization makes all the difference. Worth every penny

  • While the premise was intriguing, the execution fell flat. The writing style was dull, and the characters lacked depth. The plot dragged on, and the ending was unsatisfying.

  • I really wanted to love prose but I didn't think it was worth the money. I have 2a-2b waves and was really excited by the advertisements claiming it would tailor to your wave pattern and enhance it. It smelled amazing and my hair was soft and easy to manage but I did not notice and incredible difference. For the money I paid it didn't quite seem worth it. I started using As I Am co-wash from target and it's super cheap and makes my waves look and feel amazing.
