Reviews mention

  • Striking, instagrammable bottle design
  • Engaging, customizable quiz experience
  • Pleasant, long-lasting signature scents
  • Occasional effective detangling conditioner
  • Inconsistent, underwhelming formula performance
  • Overpowering, artificial fragrance options
  • Drying, low-slip curly conditioner
  • Residue buildup causing greasy roots

Function of Beauty earns polarized reviews: while customization, scents, and sleek packaging delight many, the formulas often perform like standard shampoos and can leave hair greasy, dry, or even shedding—so the brand is inconsistent rather than reliably good. Reviews also praise detangling conditioners and defined curls for some hair types, but cite overpowering/artificial fragrances, residue and build‑up, weak moisturization for textured hair, and faulty pumps or short straws as recurring drawbacks.

  • I tried the bespoke shampoo and conditioner and loved the idea of this and the ability to bespoke the fragrance etc. The products were ok, but can’t say I would write home about them or that they did anything magical to my hair. It felt a little style over substance. They have expanded their product range since I last purchased so it may be worth another try.

  • This hair mask seemed promising, but maybe adding the boosters would make it work better. Not sure if the product at Target is the same as the one from their website.

  • Another product that was Instagram targeted, but really didn’t do much for my hair at all. I loved the eco friendly packaging and the scents were amazing, however for my hair I saw no results. I have THICK, straight hair, but it’s fairly fine and dries out easily. I felt that the shampoo did as most shampoos do - dries it out even more. In addition, the conditioner also provided no desired effect - my hair felt like it was not detangling unless I placed a larger-than-normal amount on my head, and still did not feel soft to smooth after application. This may work for other hair types, but after using a whole bottle I didn’t see any results and went back to my original products. At least my hair smelled amazing!

  • When I first tried Function of Beauty, I loved it! But for some reason every order after that, it didn't feel the same. I'm not quite sure why... it just felt like it wasn't giving the same benefits as before. Thankfully they have great customer service and wanted to make it right.

  • I tried one round of shampoo and conditioner from function of beauty and was extremely underwhelmed. It can be difficult to find products that work well long term for my curly/wavy hair. I have a few different curl patterns and tend to get greasy quick. The idea of a customized shampoo and conditioner really spoke to me. The packaging and process of ordering was really cute and fun, but I don't think the product did anything noticeable for my hair and I got better results from non-customized products.

  • I tried this brand about 4-5 years ago, probably in their launch year. I bought the trio of products online, made to my liking and needs, and I've never had such greasy hair in my life. Which isn't usually an issue. I never finished the products, I think I stopped about halfway, and used the shampoo to clean my makeup brushes afterwards!

The products were still expensive, which I can understand given the customization of the formulation, but in the end it was not worth it at all.

  • Loved the fully customisable element but in the end I didn’t like how my hair felt after using the shampoo and conditioner. I did enjoy the smell and packaging.

  • I didn’t love how heavily dyed the color of the shampoo and conditioner are and when I used it . Sometimes it made my hair look really good and sometimes it made my hair feel really gross and kind of gritty.

  • The overall experience of the brand is cool- no doubt. You choose everything down to the smell and color. With all that going into it (and the price) I would've expected more. I would rather spend a bit more for a brand like Kevin Murphy and get a product worth the price.

I have wavy hair so was excited to get a "custom" shampoo. I literally saw no difference at all from my regular shampoo. With so much customization you expect to have SOME benefit or feature... not really. I might check back and try again in the future potentially, but wouldn't make a point of it.

  • I have the conditioner, but it wasn’t very moisturizing as I have colored, bleached hair. Packaging was really cute and I liked being able to add boosters but I wouldn’t buy it again

  • Great product. I first tried this a year ago and the website was very easy to determine what was best for my hair.

I think the target version is slightly different.

  • I've tried their hair products for both my kid and myself. She has very curly dry hair while I have straight hair and oily roots. My favorite product from FoB is their straight hair conditioner. I have tried it with and without the add-on capsules and I don't see a big difference in the final result. My kid didn't find their curly hair products as good as expected.

I will keep buying the straight hair conditioner but won't probably buy the add ons, as I don't see any difference in my hair when I use them rather when I use the product as it is in the bottle.

  • I have fine, curly hair. I ordered the fragrance free version. Did not like how it smelled or made my hair look.

Super cute packaging and idea but didn’t feel like the price was worth the quality of the actual product

  • The shampoo and conditioner I received were just so-so. The packaging is super fun— loved the personalization and having my name on the bottles and they smelled good but ultimately they just weren’t hydrating enough for my hair and I wouldn’t spend the money again. There are better options out there for us curly girls.

  • This was a bit of a lukewarm experience for me. I was excited about the prospect of custom haircare and was looking forward to trying it after reading dozens upon dozens of glowing reviews. The reviewers had one thing right; the haircare smelled divine. As for the function part of it? Not so ideal. It just really didn't do anything spectacular for my hair. It sat kind of heavy, didn't feel like it was doing a great job of shampooing or conditioning, and left my hair a bit frizzier than it started.

All in all, this just wasn't a great fit for me and isn't something I'd splurge on. I do love all the customization aspects, from color to scent to hair goals, but ultimately feel that the promises fell short. It was a fun surprise finding out they send decorative stickers with their bottles, though. If you're intrigued by the brand and think it may be worth a try, give it a whirl! They do have a good return policy. Just don't forget to turn off your auto-replenishment like I did and end up with even more product you can't use. To the company's credit, they issued a partial refund for the second batch.

  • Great product but not the best. It's easy to get what you want/need into your shampoo and conditioner with personalization. But the formula isn't as good as what I was using before.

I love that they are available in stores now. Super easy to rebuy and try different things!

  • Not anything life changing. Felt like regular drug store shampoo and conditioner.

    Feedback

Disliked the smell of the product even when I tried the unscented versions.

  • the branding is nice but the actual product is very underwhelming and the "personalization" aspect is really just a gimmick because I have used multiple peoples products and they're all basically the same!

  • I didn't find that the subscription model worked well for me with hair care products because my routine changed too much. It was really fun to pick the scents and the quality was decent.
