Reviews on Prose’s website have a higher average rating compared to reviews on Thingtesting.
Prose earns strong reviews for customized hair and skincare that often deliver softer, cleaner-feeling hair, reduced frizz, easier detangling, defined curls, and healthier-feeling scalps; however, results vary, with some users reporting dryness, greasiness, or even increased shedding. Reviewers praise the detailed quiz, personalized scents, and luxe, name-printed packaging, while noting inconsistent curl performance, lightweight conditioners that can feel insufficient, and formulas that don’t always outperform standard products.

To be honest I didn't really sense a difference in my hair after having using this custom made for me shampoo and conditioner.
Prose makes a beautiful packaged product and the scent is amazing, BUT I found that the shampoo and conditioner did not do much for my hair. I never felt like it was really getting clean and after my hair dried, it still felt oily and seemed to leave a residue. However, I have wavy, coarse hair and it may work differently for other hair types!
I used Prose for 2.5 years, starting early pandemic, when I succumbed to a thoughtful targeted ad and thought the isolation would be a good time to train my hair to go longer between washes. The pricing at the time was very reasonable, and I liked the customization process. (The prices has since gone up a bit, but I think they are still reasonable.) I used my first batch of their shampoo and conditioner for nine months, which I think is a testament to how well it worked! I fairly quickly was able to go from washing my hair every other day to every 4ish days, which felt like a huge improvement. When I got my first haircut after the pandemic began (so it had been over a year), she noted how healthy my hair was, and was surprised it had been that long since it had been cut. My next two batches each lasted me 10 months. I don't have a ton of hair so probably don't use quite as much product as others might, but you really get a lot of bang for your buck. I always do two rounds of shampoo, but you really need just a small amount — it lathers super well. Customer service: Really good. Several times, I forgot to "snooze" my subscription, and would get an email that my next batch was being processed before I was close to being done with my current one. Without fail or hassle, I'd email the support line and they would cancel the order and refund me. That takes me to why I'm giving it four stars instead of five (although if I could give 4.5, I would). I really do love the concept, but for me, I found the subscription system just cumbersome enough that it felt like another thing I had to remember, so I cancelled my subscription in an effort to "declutter" my life. (You can purchase the products without a subscription, but the price increases.) There are a lot of options for shampoo and conditioner and I just prefer to purchase in-person, when I need it. (Doing so also lets me mix it up, which is fun, and smell the scents before buying. I never disliked any of the scents I got, but I wasn't *obsessed* with any of them.) In conclusion, it's a great product, and if you're someone who enjoys having these types of things on an automatic subscription, definitely worth giving it a shot. For me, the product wasn't life-changing enough to merit doing so, but I used it happily for nearly three years with no regrets. [For awareness, my hair is straight, fine-to-medium, un-dyed, not particularly oily or dry. I've used it when my hair was short and long. For the last year or so, I have been using Olaplex once every four washes or so.]
I swear by these products. They made my hair look and feel divine when nothing else could. My hair was soft, fluffy, and silky. I was so impressed. However, the bottles expired rather quickly. I still use the expired product anyway.
I have curly/wavy hair and sometimes struggle with frizzies. I noticed when I used prose that the curls were pretty well defined and I had less frizz. I stopped using it a while ago just based on price and a need to rethink all the subscriptions I had but I have considered going back to it at some point.

Was gifted through a friends and family free code from Prose employee. They warned me but I didn’t listen. I used the full customized system and it turned my hair to straw. The employee then gifted me the full Iles Formula system (would recommend) to repair my new stringy dry locks because they felt bad.
Liked the idea of personalized hair care and like the packaging and scent. Didn’t seem to work that well for my hair though.
10/10. I love the packaging and each product is so specific for every need
I bought the shampoo and conditioner after a trusted former vogue beauty editor turned influencer recommended it. I took the hair quiz, which I admit, is innovative, and ordered my formulas. I received them and used them for about a week (I wash my hair daily). The shampoo left a really weird film on my hair, and the conditioner actually dried out my ends. I couldn’t bare to keep using it. I ended up using both of the products as shaving balm when my shaving cream ran out. Yikes.
I’ve used the Prose shampoo, conditioner, and curl cream on and off for over two years now. The products definitely make my hair feel nice, but I didn’t feel the set was worth the price, even considering the customization.
I was gifted by Prose and absolutely adored the hair test to get my customized hair products. You can even customize the scent in your whole lineup! The products are very high quality and seriously make a huge difference in the overall end goal.
I used the make your own shampoo service because I have curly hair that tends towards frizzy in the spring and summer months. The online quiz was really easy and the online ordering experience was smooth. When I got the bottle it felt like good quality and the smell was so nice and remained in my hair as a gentle scent throughout the day.
I wanted to love this brand, I was so excited to try it and see how it worked on my hair but honestly it was nothing special. I was hoping I could get more from my naturally wavy hair based on their Instagram ads but I could but see any difference between their "custom" formula and any other curly hair products. Not worth the money to me.
For the first time trying it, let me tell you that this immediately gave my hair a shine and made it super soft. Being a color treated blonde it’s so crucial to have hydration and repair. Definitely worth every penny! Plus it’s a special shampoo conditioner specifically for your hair type

I absolutely love how personalized this felt. From my name being on the bottle to the smell that I picked out. It felt very me. I’ve only used it a few times so I’m unsure of the effectiveness after the entire product has been used but my hair already feels so healthy. I do wish the one time purchase was a big bigger. This was a gifted by Prose.

I really wanted to love the prose products but ultimately felt that they were nothing more than perfectly fine. They didn't have a negative impact on my hair but I also don't think that they made a difference. I don't think they're worth the custom shampoo price tag.
I love prose. I never run out, it smells really nice and my hair is the cleanest and softest it’s ever been. I’ve even been able to wash my hair less often than I was prior to using prose. They even will give you a surprise with your order sometimes.
Pretty cool to get customized shampoos for my daughter's curly hair.
I really wanted to love this product and brand, but the scent was so strong it made my stomach turn, and the formula made my scalp itchy. I was expecting something more quality, but after using this product, it was clear to me that the company focuses more on marketing and packaging than the actual product itself.
I'd give Prose hair products a solid 4/5. Having curly hair, their personalized formulas have really improved my curls – they definitely look and feel healthier. Just a heads up, if you're on a subscription, keep an eye on your shipping dates. They don't send reminders before your next shipment, only once they have shipped. So if you need to skip a month due to too much product on hand, you’ll want to be proactive about checking those shipping dates. That being said, their customer service is great, super responsive. All in all, Prose is worth the money for the customization to suit your hair’s needs.
