Reviews on Prose’s website have a higher average rating compared to reviews on Thingtesting.
Prose earns strong reviews for customized hair and skincare that often deliver softer, cleaner-feeling hair, reduced frizz, easier detangling, defined curls, and healthier-feeling scalps; however, results vary, with some users reporting dryness, greasiness, or even increased shedding. Reviewers praise the detailed quiz, personalized scents, and luxe, name-printed packaging, while noting inconsistent curl performance, lightweight conditioners that can feel insufficient, and formulas that don’t always outperform standard products.

Even though I ended up stopping my subscription, I really enjoyed Prose for the few years I had it. The shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in conditioner all worked great, and I appreciated the customization aspect. The one issue I had was with the digital product. Once, they sent me an email saying I was eligible for a free product, and then they followed up saying they'd sent that by mistake. That didn't make me feel valued as a customer. I was also skeptical once they started moving into the skincare realm.
I liked it at first but then it began to break me out. It’s also expensive to keep up with
Tested it at my moms and actually loved the concept! Super cool.
I have very thick, wavy hair that tends to be dry and frizzy due to highlighting. These products have helped a lot with making my hair feel softer and easier to comb through, but didn't really help with the frizz. The products are expensive, but since I only wash 2-3 x per week, one shipment of shampoo/conditioner lasts at least 6-8 weeks, and I have been using th same bottle of leave-in conditioner for months. I did find it difficult to access directions on how to use some of the products, like the hair mask and curl cream, as the directions aren't on the packaging.
I’ve been using prose for almost two years now. I don’t hate it but don’t really love. I honestly just can’t decide on another shampoo to use. The formula is a little too drying and the conditioner is a little too heavy and can only use the smallest drop of it on the very ends of my hair. One day I’ll find something better to use.
I liked the dry shampoo, but after the product got to halfway in the bottle it was very difficult to squirt out. The shampoo and conditioner didn’t deliver. My hair was still oily and the color-protection didn’t work. Update: the day after I posted the above review, Prose reached out to me. They allowed me to update my quiz and took my allergies and new concerns under review. I’m being sent a new formula to try now. Fingers crossed that they work better for me. I’ll update you once dot arrives!
Tried the full line up and didn’t notice much of a difference. I do like the concept, and the packaging was nice.

I love that you take a quiz and they find what’s right for you. I bought it once to try but it’s expensive

Great product, bad customer service and marketing. Product: I love not having to go out to buy shampoo/conditioner, having products tailored to me, really lovely seasonal scents. Shipping is also usually quick.

Subscription: Other subscription services I use let you pick your order date, which can be easily adjusted. If you want your Prose product sooner, you have to email customer service. We used to get email reminders saying your subscription is renewing soon, but they stopped doing that suddenly, which means surprise charges. The customer service response was: you should set a reminder in your calendar yourself. Additional Marketing/Customer Service: I received an email from Prose about a seasonal scent change mere hours before they closed off orders for the scent entirely. I reached out to customer service to change my order date so I could get this seasonal scent (again, because you cannot change the date yourself) only for them to respond with the fact that the window had closed and I missed it and they were sorry. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t give customers more of a chance (a few days or a week instead of a few hours?) to get a scent if this is the way their service works. (This post has been edited for clarity and to confirm that I have in fact cancelled my subscription after being a customer for years. Not worth my time or frustration,)
My hair doesn't fit conventional labels - not thick strands but lots of hair, wavy in the winter and curly in the summer. Prose is the first brand that does what my hair needs. And the fact that they take into consideration the hardness of the water where you live is also key.

First time a product has met my exact hair needs.

I have a bunch of hair issues and was super excited to find something that I could customize to target those said issues. I did the works, shampoo, conditioner and vitamins and everything was a resounding meh. The scent was too perfumey for me, the texture was...milky and worst of all it didn't do much for the look of my hair. I now use some tried and true Kiehl's products and have found better results with Quai's hair vitamins.
I have been using Prose for over 2 years now and absolutely love it. I have the shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner, hair oil, and dry shampoo. I love that you fill out a detailed questionnaire about your hair condition and goals, which even takes your zip code into consideration for environmental factors. You can add color protection and opt in for leaving out new pumps for your next order to reduce waste. With the subscription you get a discount and you can delay or cancel whenever. It took me over a year to get through the hair oil because it is super thick, you don't need that much. I love the leave-in conditioner, but hate the dry shampoo.

I feel like I need to use a TON of the dry shampoo to see any difference. Also, the dry shampoo bottle sucks. Half the time nothing comes out.
Love Prose! I found that my very straight, thick hair carried way more volume and felt lighter after I started using it. It was a bit pricey for my liking. I loved that they offered a scalp scrub for me too. I had really bad dandruff and the scrub really helped with making my head less flakey.
I'm disabled and on a very tight budget, so this is a MAJOR splurge for me even to just do the shampoo, but drugstore shampoo alone is NOT an option for my hair. None of them work very well. I have hair that is very hard to manage and hates virtually all products - super thin strands growing in massive quantities on top of a sensitive scalp. Even as a kid, I kinda had to just deal with a virtual rat's nest. Well, not so much anymore. I do use the custom shampoo, and supplement with a drugstore shampoo for the first wash to make it last longer, and, well, my hair is better than it's ever been, even with using a generic conditioner. My family even compliments how smooth and shiny it now is, and the way the natural waviness is coming out more. The shampoo also smells pretty dang great, honestly. I love the fact that it's also thick enough not to go to waste. I do also have the leave-in conditioner, which I refill far less often and use for extra moisture and detangling as needed, and that is actually an impressively solid product. To have hair that tangles so easily come out so smooth after being sprayed down a bit on a particularly stubborn hair day is always a rather nice feeling - though, in this case especially, there ARE several alternatives out there that are probably decent enough for most people, at all kinds of price points. That being said, I don't feel it to be a waste, since I only use this one on the days that really need extra help from higher-quality products, and this comes with the convenience of coming in one shipment with the shampoo. Again, I supplement with something off the drugstore shelf for the less needy days. I know I'd be better off still if I had more money to spend in this area, but I hope it's at least clear that you really can easily make it stretch quite a bit and still benefit greatly, if money is an issue and you have hair that needs a bit more help than anything at the drugstore can offer.
I have a prose hairbrush and I love it. It is great quality and not too hard on my scalp or hair. Is a great gift if you get it personalized!
I tried this brand since everything is made and tailored to your specific hair. I found it to be drying and it took the life out of my voluminous hair. Ended up just giving it away.
I was lucky enough to get a chance to try some of the products and now I get them monthly. I never thought I would be one to have just a few products for my skin routine but they make the sets just for you so you!
Excellent product and worth buying again. I was satisfied with the quality, may even be better than what I normally purchase. I would definitely buy this again and will be trying the varieties offered.
I've been using it for a while now and really like it. it's very expensive. but it lasts a long time. sometimes it's hard to get the formula just right. so take the test very seriously, and answer the questions as accurately as you can, or the formula may not come out right.
I think prose is an innovative product and I found the process through to receiving the product really fun. I think it’s worth a try if you’re interested. In the end, it’s a bit gimmicky as the formulas are similar to any shampoo/conditioner line with several versions. I eventually found the packaging too wasteful for me compared to the benefit of the product.
