Reviews on Prose’s website have a higher average rating compared to reviews on Thingtesting.
Prose earns strong reviews for its personalized hair and skincare that often deliver softer, shinier, more manageable hair and calmer, hydrated skin, with many noting reduced frizz, cleaner-feeling scalps, and bouncier curls—especially with the Pre‑Shampoo Scalp Mask, Custom Shampoo/Conditioner, and Curl Cream. However, reviews also report misses: formulas that feel heavy or drying, minimal results versus drugstore options, scent sensitivity, and recurring complaints about subscription management; some users even cite increased shedding or irritation.

Aside from the gorgeous scent options, I found my prose regimen did way more harm than good. I have a very sensitive scalp which is why I was intrigued by their custom formulas, but my six month use resulted in my scalp being irritated beyond measure.
I used Prose for 2 years. It smells wonderful! I love that I could change the scent and qualities for a personalized fit for me. That said I didn’t really notice any great changes in my hair once I began using it or in the following 2 years. If you only care about great smelling hair then this is the hair care system for you!
I understand the appeal of Prose. Its a personalized beauty product with a lot of promise and without a hefty price tag. I really wanted to love this product but I was a bit disappointed. I found that my wavy hair ended up more frizzy than wavy/curly and it felt like it got oily quicker than using other shampoos. I will say that one great pro is being able to choose the scent. Im very picky about certain scents (HATE floral for ex) and its great to be able to order shampoo online and generally have an idea of the scent Im going to get. In the end I ended up returning the products and use another brand entirely.

I tired prose for about four months. I do not feel like the shampoo or conditioner had any effect on my hair. The curl cream was nice but I ultimately felt like I couldn’t find a similar product at a lower price point.
I loved the scent but it’s very pricey for what it is. I didn’t see any change in my hair. I think it’s more of a marketing play.
I purchased Prose hair conditioner in October 2018, specifically formulated for curly hair in the NYC climate. I selected the fragrance-free formulation, and was disappointed by the unpleasant odor. Overall, I had mixed feelings about this conditioner, as it delivered on its promises for curly hair, but the scent was less than desirable for a fragrance-free product.
I have been using prose shampoo and conditioner for 8 months now. I get dandruff and very dry scalp especially in the winter. Prose has helped with this. I like the scent customization and the option to retake your test whenever you want. I have tried the pre-shampoo scalp treatment and went through the entire container. I found the treatment very overpriced and almost watered down. I plan on continuing to use the shampoo and conditioner and have the leave in conditioner set to ship with my next box. I really like the ease of use of their website and managing your subscription. I only wash my hair 1-2x per week and I am able to pause my subscription until I need more. I also appreciate the option to reuse your current pumps for the bottles.
Although the customization was cool, I didn't notice a difference in my hair, and I ended up not liking the scent I choose. If I am going to be paying that much for customized shampoo, I would hope I could notice a difference in my hair.

Makes my hair look nice, but not necessarily better than lower-cost options. I thought the survey was fun to take, but for fun I tried using a friend's subscription who has a different hair texture and style goal, and it worked very similarly.

Make it easier to manage subscriptions.
I've used this for a couple of years, and noticed a big difference in how shiny, smooth & voluminous my hair became. Love that you can customize your own formulation, depending on your specific hair conditions, lifestyle, & even local climate/weather/pollution.

Now that I've been a repeat customer, I wish they didn't send me such elaborate packaging each time. Too much paper/cardboard waste. Also, wish it came in different bottle sizes (bulk & mini). Also, the price point really is very high. I am considering switching to a more affordable brand.
Not a great shampoo/conditioner for curly hair. For context I'm 3c/4a hair and I wouldn't recommend this. It's pretty drying too.
Feedback
Better hydration for those with tighter curl patterns.

It's a cool concept but i am not sure it makes any difference on my hair beyond what i'd get from other sources
Feedback
i am not sure it works.
Very expensive and underwhelming. The formula they "customized" for me left my hair both more frizzy and more oily than the Herbal Essences set I switched from. And their subscription comes far too frequently to allow for consumption of the products (with long hair, washing every ~3rd day): I found that I'd accidentally paid for and received my next set pretty much as soon as I determined it was not working for me.
Really deserved 5 stars. I used Prose for over 2 years. I remember when I started I was impressed how haircare can improve hair condition. At that time I was ready to chop my dry damaged hair, but luckily I saw Prose add and decided to give my hair another chance. And it worked. From the first use my hair became smooth, fizz free, looking alive, healthy and shiny.
Entire UX and experience was top notch. I wanted to love the product, but it left my hair feeling a bit greasy.
I’ve been a prose user for about 6 months - I’m on my 3rd bottle of shampoo and conditioner. The products are effective and do seem personalized - my hair is softer and more glossy than with my prior haircare products. Their scents are beautiful (but you can go unscented too if you’re sensitive).

Ordering is easy - you take a survey to see if your last order did what you needed it to, and they adjust your formula accordingly. You also have the option to stop ordering pumps for your refills, so you can re-use your prior pumps.

I have curly hair, so finding the right products is always challenging. It always felt that once I'd find products that work, about every 6 months I'd have to switch to something else, almost like my hair would get used to it, move past the novelty stage and say, nope, give me something else! So I was excited to try the customized approach that Prose offers. It felt like I've found the winner for a while, but then my hair was getting drier and easily breaking and I had to switch to a different product. I have friends who love Prose, but perhaps it's the curly hair that is wildly "strong-willed" that needs something else.
I love Prose however, I recently received my shampoo in a plastic instead of a glass bottle which frustrated me. Their formulas make my hair soft and feel healthy - plus I love knowing exactly what's in the bottle. It gives my hair exactly what it needs and nothing extra :)

Not a fan of their facial skin care line. The hair care products are ok. The scent is very light, which I personally didn't like, but if you're scent sensitive, it might be a good fit. I tried the first set, and then put my review in for my second set, but still unimpressed. Plus, it is fairly expensive and the bottles are small. I'll be sticking with Tweak'd by Nature and Wen by Chaz Dean haircare. Better results, and more bang for my buck. (Plus a larger variety of scenes and more concentrated scents; for those with scent-sensitivity Tweak'd has an excellent fragrance free line!) Also, one thing I really did not appreciate was no heads-up email on my upcoming renewal of subscription. I should be on top of that myself, but with all the other subscription services on everyone's lives, and how busy life is, it's easy to forget. Every other service I use, regardless of product or service offered, send an email a week or so before renewal. Since Prose is "tailored" for each individual customer, there's absolutely no cancelation after orders are placed, which I understand. But that just highlights the need for s heads up. Also, reaching out to customer service has never gotten me a response, or even acknowledgement.
I started using my Prose shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner and curl cream formulations 60 days ago. I have long fine thin hairs, but a million of them, with various degrees of natural curl in different parts of my head, and had damage from mid-shaft downward from heat styling which I need to do if I want all the areas to look uniform, and years of non-bleach lightening to make my mousy color a honey blonde. Simethicone products look greasy on me rather than shiny, and other curl creams weigh my hair down and look gunky. The Prose products are working wonderfully on my hair. It did not make my curls all uniform because that’s just my weird hair (some areas straight, some gently curly (large loops) and one big section of kinky hair - wtf!) but both my Prose leave in conditioner and curl cream have heat protectant so I’m using them both before I heat style. My hair the past month is shinier from top to bottom with no more visible damage mid-shaft to ends, it’s got a clean light bounce, looks thicker and holds my styled curls much better. I love how my hair looks, I have been wearing it down more, and other women have been complimenting me and asking me who’s now “doing” my hair. I also love the scent (I have Oasis). I love my Prose products and think I’ll be a long term customer.
