Nellie Packable Puffer Jacket

  • Pros: The Nellie jacket is honestly really great. I got one of the limited colors (Cherry), and since I received it, it’s become a weekly staple for me. Living in the Bay Area, a puffer is basically an all-weather jacket. I like that it has snaps for the cuffs, a drawstring for the bottom hem, and a tall enough collar (able to be folded down!) which help protect against the wind more. The jacket is roomy enough to fit a big sweater underneath (I ordered true to size). Packing it into itself is really easy, and the luggage handle loop is a nice feature. The zippers seem good quality, too. There are also hanging loops at the inside and outside at the neck which are nice touches. Didn’t notice any stitching problems, which I appreciated and hopefully is a good sign about their manufacturers because soo many brands at high price points have stitching issues now. Cons: The lining feels a little flimsy, maybe because it’s a little loose. Idk if it’s because of the packability and I hope it isn’t a bad sign for longevity, but I think it’s something to note. Also, due to the slippery material and the oversized fit, the jacket can slip back in its positioning while you’re wearing it (so the front rides up more). I think this happens mostly when I’m carrying a bag on my shoulder. And the only reason this bothers me is because the seams on the side pockets kinda get in the way of easily sliding your hands in. So when it has slid back a bit, I need to readjust my bag and my jacket to get my keys out, for example. And when you’re carrying heavy groceries, it’s a little annoying. Also because it’s slippery, if I’m carrying a bag with a lighter load on my shoulder, the straps constantly slip off. I assume this happens with other puffers, though, so this comment is more about advising others for lifestyle match rather than a knock on the product itself. The price is quite high, and I’m not sure that it actually offers more in terms of quality/sustainability. The jacket lining is 100% recycled and 45% of the outer is also recycled, and it’s made in Vietnam. Besides Halfdays being a small business, I didn’t find substantial information about sustainability/working conditions which would explain a higher price point than other brands with similar products. Overall: I really like the jacket and will continue wearing it. But I’m glad I got it through Thingdrop and didn’t (in the end) pay full price for it.
