  • Luxurious personalized packaging
  • Customizable elegant fragrances
  • Detailed tailoring questionnaire
  • Noticeably softer, shinier hair
  • Inconsistent curl definition
  • Occasional drying formulas
  • Lightweight, underpowered conditioner
  • Potential scalp irritation/shedding

Prose earns strong reviews for customized hair and skincare that often deliver softer, cleaner-feeling hair, reduced frizz, easier detangling, defined curls, and healthier-feeling scalps; however, results vary, with some users reporting dryness, greasiness, or even increased shedding. Reviewers praise the detailed quiz, personalized scents, and luxe, name-printed packaging, while noting inconsistent curl performance, lightweight conditioners that can feel insufficient, and formulas that don’t always outperform standard products.

  • Products smell great but other than that, are no better than what you can find in the supermarket and they only send you one pump for 3 bottles of product.

  • The shampoo and conditioner ended up stripping hair. It caused frizz. This might be better than your bottom of the line shampoo from Walmart but it's much worse than a decent shampoo, even one from Target. The company is rather shady. They say 100% return guarantee but if you try to return it they doing everything they can to either send you a new one or get you to keep the product long enough to hit the 30 day no return. A company that stand behind their product should really stand behind it, not hide behind a 5 step pain in the ass return process. If it's easier to order than return that's a red flag. Further, the company pushes you into a subscription and they try to charge your card for the "refill" as fast as possible (even shipping a month after the charge). They tell you they cannot stop the shipment because it was custom. Again, more shady practices trying to hit each customer for everything they can extract rather than confidently standing. Behind their product. This product has so many "positive" reviews on the internet anywhere that is a blog or podcaster. It's clear these were bought out. If you go looking for real consumer reviews, like this one, you get a different story.

Make returns as easy as purchases. Stand behind your product. Stop pushing subscription so hard trying, people should come to you with the "shut up and take my money" if you had a solid product.

  • I had a subscription with prose for a little over two years. I had shampoo, conditioner and two supplements. I did see differences in my hair and really enjoyed the supplements because I saw an improvement in my hair growth. After seeing a dermatologist and working with a couple hair professionals, I decided I didn’t need the shampoo/conditioner anymore but wanted to keep getting my supplements. When I contacted prose to cancel only the S/C they basically said alright but do you mind sharing why. So I explained and again requested to discontinue the S/C and keep the subscription for the supplements. Prose responded that they were sorry to see me go but had cancelled my subscription. Oh and by the way “ Also, I'm incredibly sorry as I've accidentally canceled your Supplements subscription too. If you'd like, you can continue to place non-subscription orders or resubscribe through your account page.” How convenient for them.

  • For a few years, my hair had been pretty dry and dead. I ordered the shampoo and conditioner after taking the quiz and have been using Prose for around 3 years. My hair is a lot healthier, shinier, and longer now. I tried the hair oil too, but it makes my hair way too greasy so I'm not a fan of that product.

  • This product did not seem to make any noticeable difference on my hair even after 6 months of usage and tweaking my custom formula. I like the scent, a little bit goes a long way, and wholesome ingredients, but I don’t think it was worth the money.

  • I ordered it hoping it would help my thick, curly, frizzy hair. It's made me lose an alarming amount of hair so I had to stop using it.

  • I tried it because I saw it on TikTok and thought I'd give it a shot. The packaging was nice, but overall I wasn't impressed. My package arrived with two pumps that wouldn't work, making it difficult to dispense the products easily. The products smelt nice but weren't durable. I can typically go a few days with my curls still looking fresh, but I was lucky if my curls made it two days while using this product. Honestly, I was disappointed because its marketing on TikTok made it look like the advent of curl care. I was deeply disappointed, especially because of the price.

I never received a feedback survey, so I had to post this here. But as a person with textured hair, I felt very disappointed by this product.

  • My hair is falling out! I've tried 100s of products on my hair before and plenty have been - less than ideal, but I never felt the need to review- not everything works for everyone. I made no other changes to my hair routine besides trying prose's shampoo, conditioner, pre shampoo mask, and curl cream. The amount of hair I'm losing during detailing and washing has more than doubled. My styled hair is limp and visibly more dull. I have waist length very thick wavy hair I've always been quite proud of - and I'm sure it's halved in volume in the last 3 months. The products provided NO moisture and just a pump of the shampoo for both scalp and lengths stripped my hair completely. I'm upset, and really hope I can salvage my hair before I need to resort to chopping it off.

  • For how much they advertise and brand their product, I was highly disappointed. I also expected glass bottles for the price and sustainability. Also didn't expect such small bottles? Perhaps I didn't pay close enough attention to the measurement when purchasing but really for nearly 50$, the wee plastic bottles are kind of a joke. As for the custom formula, after comparing to a few others online, it appears there really is nothing custom about it. Their customizing perhaps comes in the form of scents as you are able to choose your scent profile but for as nice as the scents sounded, neither of my bottles smell anything like the options I chose. I have fine, thick, very straight hair that is prone to break and dryness. I honestly I didn't notice any difference when using Prose the first time other than my hair being very tangled after conditioning. the conditioner was really disappointing overall, clumpy, a bit difficult to actually work through the hair, didn't feel like it did anything for me. Just feels like a marketing scam. Would not recommend wasting your time, effort or money on it. Do some research and find what your hair type is and what your largest issues are and build your own hair care around that. For my girls that share my hair type: clarifying/tea tree shampoos & Mielle products are way better than Prose.

  • The products are good but the price point is high for what it is. HOWEVER be very careful with the status of your subscription or else you will end up with a huge pile up of product. Once you receive an order confirmation it is practically impossible to get it cancelled because their customer service answers in ONE TO THREE DAYS, and once the order is processed they can't cancel it. I canceled my subscription LAST MONTH and STILL GOT CHARGED THIS MONTH. If you in any way care about accidentally wasting a hundred or so dollars on something you don't need DON'T USE PROSE.

  • Don't take the bait- it's all packaging! The smell was nice, but that's about it. These products did not deliver any results. Hair was dryer and floppier than before. My hair is wavy but very fine, so hard to get curl definition. I had hoped customization was real, but I think it is slick marketing, I've have had better luck with higher end drugstore, sulfate-free products, which are still half the price of Prose. I would not recommend this line.

  • I have been using the shampoo and conditioner for about a year now. The products work well for me. My hair feels manageable and shiny. Gives it body. I also use the hair mask in between wished that came out in a pump as well as I use too much of the product at times. Overall pleased with results and hubby loves the acent.

Have the scalp mask be in a pump dispenser.

  • I liked the products. However the issues come in when you need to get ahold of customer service. Customer service is by email only and as stated on their website can take 2 - 3 business days. This is not helpful when you need help! I have short hair and wash 2 - 3 times a week. My intial order I still have about 1/4 left of shampoo and 3/4 of conditioner and the same for the pre shampoo formula. YOU must sign up for a subscription. When I got my first reminder that my 2nd order would be shipping soon, I went to the webiste and the only thing that I could do was extend it out by 90 days! Then without a reminder I get an email stating that my order is now processing. I sent them a reply message to this email, stating that I do not need more product at this time. A day later I recieved a message stating that they could not stop my order because it is already processing! This is complete "BULL". I responded to this message clearly again stating not to ship the order. I told them that I felt that they are pushing product onto me that I do not need. Without any response, I get an email Monday at noon stating that my order has shipped! Well, now I am done with this company! I will take this up with my Credit Card company since it is impossible to deal with this company because of complete lack of customer service.

  • I really wanted to like Prose. I kept seeing ads all over Instagram and decided to finally try it out. The issue I have is the price for everything. With the pre-shampoo mask, conditioner, and shampoo, I spent over 100 dollars. The conditioner and shampoo bottles are too small for the price that they are. I really wanted to make both last a few months but I feel like I will be running out soon. I can’t justify spending close to 100 dollars every couple months. The scent is amazing but it doesn’t last a long time 🙁 I really wanted to keep buying from Prose but I don’t think it’s worth it.

Please consider adjusting the price a bit. Also, if the prices are kept the same, can Prose consider using larger bottles? please consider using glass instead of plastic as well!

  • I hope at least one person thinking about buying this see's this and is saved from the trouble of damaged hair. I was so excited for a "made for me formula" to help my hair and scalp and went in completely blinded by the cool idea of Prose... Little did I know it would cause my hair to fall out, break off in half and go dry beyond comprehension, my hair I once worked so hard to get to a good spot is ruined all because I wanted to try Prose. I am devastated and deceived.

Communication in a company is key. I tried to cancel and the email I got replied stating "they will respond in typically 1-3 business days" THATS HOW LONG IT TAKES MY POST OFFICE TO MAIL SOMETHING. Their servers must be full of people cancelling or they dont have the team to help reply. Either way it causes issues and not professional. Their communication with the customers really needs worked on.

  • Works better than anything else I've spent a zillion dollars on. The differences in reviews are wild. Some people get only a few uses out of the (admittedly small) bottles, and some people like me have to constantly snooze orders because we have too much and, as a natural product with very little to no preservatives, it expires before we can use it. I don't buy the hair mask or the vitamins. I just do the shampoo, conditioner, curl cream. Oasis is my scent and it's AWESOME. My scalp is healthier than ever. Hair is finally growing long. My hair is type 2b or c?, different on different places on my head, extremely fine and porous, frustratingly delicate. I have "tubular" spiral curls in the back. Every other product is a disaster. I have spent embarrassing amounts of money on my hair, and it's not colored or styled in any way. Prose is a game changer. I'm finally owning the curls/waves.

Hair is still a little frizzy. Website could be more user friendly. Slow to ship, but I know they're trying to be carbon-neutral so I suck it up.

  • I placed an order. They say your product will arrive 5-10 days after ordering. At one week, my order hadn’t shipped. I contacted customer service - they replied that it was a “breathing day” for their “overloaded” staff and they’d get back to me next week. It had now been a week and a half and order hadn’t even been *fulfilled* much less shipped. I had to dispute with my bank: a subscription service has *one job* and prose does not deliver. Save your money.

  • I have a very dry scalp and was specifically looking for products that would help with that without being overly harsh on my hair (like Head&Shoulders is). Prose made my scalp soooo much drier, even after adjusting my formula several times. Maybe it works ok for people without a dry scalp, but if you're a dry person I would avoid.

Made my dry scalp SO MUCH WORSE!!

  • Hated it. My hair quickly dried out and began falling really badly

  • I'm not impressed with the detangling properties of the conditioner. It comes out feeling like lotion and even with jaw length hair, I am fighting with tangles in the shower. As far as customizability of the shampoo and conditioner, I'd say the quiz is fun to take, but the results are lacking. I don't see a real improvement in my hair, even after months of use. I included color protection in my formula but after a few showers, my salon colored purple faded rapidly (which is abnormal for the color treatment I regularly get). I have also experienced some residue even after rigorous rinsing processes. For anyone curious as to how this brand compares to similar ones like Function of Beauty, I switched directly from FoB to Prose. Prose has much better quality bottles (FoB uses very flimsy plastic and the pumps broke multiple times), they are sturdy and use well functioning pumps, but I will say they are much uglier in my opinion. Function of Beauty customizes your name on the actual bottle while Prose just does it on a paper label. FoB also gives you much larger bottles for a similar price (still not as big as I'd expect for a $50 shampoo and conditioner, but better than Prose). Prose's bottle are as tall as my hand from wrist to fingertip, including the pump, and even though I would like to take my time with the product, the quality of it makes sure I have to use more product than I normally would each use to get mediocre results. Prose does do better in the scent department. They have very natural, mature scents in their collection and FoB ended up giving me a very chemically smelling conditioner instead of peach, which they proved they were capable of in the shampoo for the set. As far as hair quality, I daresay my results have gone downhill since the switch. Neither brand did anything extraordinary for my hair, but I suppose they are a step up from drugstore 2 in 1 products. I really wanted to like this product, but I am disappointed and have cancelled my subscription.

The hair science. Specifically the color protection element and the detangling abilities of the conditioner.
