  • Luxurious personalized packaging

  • Noticeably softer, shinier hair
  • Inconsistent curl definition
  • Occasional drying formulas
  • Lightweight, underpowered conditioner
  • Potential scalp irritation/shedding

Prose earns strong reviews for customized hair and skincare that often deliver softer, cleaner-feeling hair, reduced frizz, easier detangling, defined curls, and healthier-feeling scalps; however, results vary, with some users reporting dryness, greasiness, or even increased shedding. Reviewers praise the detailed quiz, personalized scents, and luxe, name-printed packaging, while noting inconsistent curl performance, lightweight conditioners that can feel insufficient, and formulas that don’t always outperform standard products.

  • Here's the thing, I love the products. BUT, they're pricy AND there's an issue with their e-mail system where an order verification e-mail doesn't go out before an order is processed. So if you forget to snooze, your order will still get processed. I've contacted them multiple times and their response every time is "we often hear from customers that they receive too many emails, and in response are exploring different options to find the best balance for our customers." I personally don't think an e-mail confirming my order is too much. And this practice feels predatory. I'm happy I can afford the products, but what about those folks that can't?

    Feedback

Bring back your order reminder e-mails. And add glass bottles - much better for the environment.

  • The products were so-so. The real issue is trying to cancel your subscription. I have tried 3 times to cancel. Hopefully this last time will work.

    Feedback

    They need to honor cancellations.

  • I like the shampoo & conditioner. The oil made my hair to fly away and too much static. However my disappointment and reason for the bad review is that the customer service is awful.. There's no customer service number & I can't figure out how to cancel the subscription. They processed my order 3 days earlier than it says on my subscription and I can't get a hold of anyone to stop it.

    Feedback

Better customer service & a phone number

  • After using prose for a little over a month I had to cancel my subscription. My scalp is completely dried out, I have scabs and terrible dandruff and I think it’s a result of using prose. I do feel like there was more shine to my hair but I don’t feel like it helped with frizz or maintaining my curls for days at a time. I also was not very fond of the smell. It sounds good with all the minerals it says it has but it has completely dried my scalp out.

  • This did absolutely nothing for my curly hair. A bit overpriced.

    Quality and price point

  • I love this stuff. One my second reformulation—trying to get it just right but it’s almost there. I love that you can control the intensity of scent (I like mine strong) and what kind of scent. The one I picked smells amazing and my hair is wonderfully soft. Great product.

    Feedback

For people who only wash their hair 1-2 times a week, you need longer interval options between subscription refills. I only need mine sent every 4-5 months and it’s annoying to have to keep pushing it out every month.

  • The products themselves are decent - I have been using the shampoo/conditioner and dry shampoo for around 2 years now. I like the scent of the products and they do fine for my hair. Ultimately I think it's a little expensive for what you get, but the products work well enough. The frequency of the product shipment is way too fast though. I built up extra stock as it is difficult to adjust the frequency beyond snoozing. Once shipped, it does take a long time to arrive as well.

    Feedback

More adjustable frequencies. I don't wash my hair enough to receive every 4 weeks!

  • I have fine, thick wavy hair and finding products that work without adding weight can be frustrating. Add to the mix that the water where I was living was doing a number on my hair and I was desperate. When I learned about Prose, I was really excited - and they asked all the right questions, including about environment and my zip code to look at the water content. My first shipment was a dream - it worked perfectly and I thought that I had at long last found gold. Then when it was time to reorder, they asked a few question (season change, ECT) and sent me what turned out to be an entirely new formula that made my hair heavy and greasy. To their credit, customer service was great - they reformulated and sent me new product free of charge, but it too made my hair gross. I called again and asked for them to just make the 1st formula because it was perfect. That's when I learned that their model is constantly changing - that they don't keep ingredients for specific formulas but work formulas to fit the cheapest ingredients they can get.

    Feedback

It felt like a bait and switch - being able to recreate formulas that are successful would've had me be a lifelong customer. I just can't cross my fingers and really hope that what I get is going to work.

  • I found prose to leave my hair frizzy and looking dull. I went back to using new hair ( I have think, wavy hair). Nice concept but does not work on me.

    Feedback

    Less frizziness

  • I liked the whole process of putting in all my information and being able to pick the scents. The product actually made my hair more dry as I continued to use it though. I love that you can re use the pumps!

    Feedback

The experience was great. The product needs to do what it says it will do not the opposite. Having bag refills would be better than only re using the pumps

  • Love the scent, but doesn’t last long. I’ve been using this for about 10 weeks and seen huge improvements in conjunction with the curly girl method. I wash 1-2 times per week and condition every day. I DO have curly hair even in the dry Colorado climate!

    Feedback

    Longer lasting scent.

  • I love how Prose continues to innovate and adjust their user experience. I’ve tried Prose on and off for a few years and it is undoubtedly the best shampoo/conditioner product I’ve used. I also like that the subscriptions allow you to edit the frequency of products separately, as I use way more conditioner than shampoo and need it replaced more often.

  • Writing this as a person who previously has done no special hair care whatsoever, but has fine (and lots of) long, oily hair. I wash a few times a week and use dry shampoo. I actually really love Prose - I've tweaked my formula once, but I notice a difference in texture, volume & oiliness. I feel like this is made for someone who doesn't want to think about hair care at all (me). My boyfriend even uses it now since we have very different hair and he hate how my formula made his curlier hair frizzy and dry.

    Feedback

I don't love their dry shampoo though -- too sticky & not layerable day after day. I also don't like the colors of the bottle (light purple & peach) and wish they could be custom or just a neutral.

  • It's an exceptional product, that is without a doubt, a fact. However, the company itself is conniving, dishonest, and manipulative, and beyond passive aggressive. They've spent more money on recruiting new influencers to gain more unsuspecting dupes then they do on really trying to be what they claim. Their communication style is rude. Their ordering platform is a mess and they manipulate ordering to force you into overusing, over-ordering, and while the product itself is "customized" for your hair needs, it's so damn difficult to customize your actual needs.

    Feedback

Prose is a location-based individually customized product, however, they only offer locations in the US and Canada where they deliver, ignoring the fact that folks from the US and Canada may actually leave those destinations for long periods of time and therefore need to have their customized formulas altered for those other locations. Prose, is only made for locations in the US and Canada. Prose makes it so difficult to view and alter your "consulation" that getting specific products for various locales is a constant battle. That makes this product EXCEPTIONALLY difficult to continue using when you travel regularly, and when using products for a dry climate in a humid climate my hair goes insane and i look like a frizzy mess. So then the product becomes entirely useless ad the customization pointless. Not only is it difficult to change the zip code on your consultation, the sizes of products are not airline/TSA specified, you can't order smaller amounts for short-term travel, and you certainly can't just order a couple products for your travel destination, which ultimately completely negates the purpose of this highly customized product. Each time you alter your "consultation" or end your "subscription" they remove the previous products from your review list and you're unable to review, re-order, or even parouse those products. It's illogical. The fact that I can't review the products or the service is HIGHLY problematic. This is just one of many rather manipulative elements to this company's website. It's exceptionally difficult to locate the "unsubscribe" information and when you unsubscribe you get a passive-aggressive email telling you "You're never going to receive our products again" are we 12 year olds? Prose provides a subscription service that is entirely unintuitive. I have shoulder length hair. Following their RECOMMENDED guidelines found in my "consultation" I should use their pre-shampoo conditioners (scalp and ends), the shampoo, and conditioner no more than 2-3 times per week. That means that Prose is perfectly capable of calculating EXACTLY how much product I need and customizing my subscription. They do not. They force you into a subscription that sends the product(s) automatically every 4 weeks a most. If I had hair down to my waist, maybe, and I emphasize maybe, I might be able to use these products in 4 weeks, but that's not gonna happen. The subscription forces you into 1-4 week schedules which are highly excessive and the antithesis of the vegan, earth-friendly, company Prose likes to pretend they are. Prose has the capacity and information via the consultations to prepare and ship products according the individual's hair length and projected usage with little waste. They choose not to do this. The company claims to be female founded, it's three french men and one woman. Seriously... it's 2022. Stop lying about basic information that's available anywhere. The only reason I'm giving 3 stars is that if I never left my current location the product is amazing. I actually really like the product. But the service, the systems, the processes, the company on the whole is an utter shitshow.

  • It smells heavenly, it made my hair detangled and it seemed fantastic. Unfortunately, my hair was falling out more than usual in the shower so I had to discontinue the use of the product. It’s been about a month.

  • Hyper-customized? No- hyper-marketing. I have a lot of thin hair that tends to frizz and was tempted by Prose’s promise to create my best full-silky hair. Instead of silky, the products made my hair feel sticky and dirty. I ended up sending the products back, and received a full refund, which is why I give Prose one star.

    Feedback

The basic product line. I don’t k ow how to improve it.

  • I tried Prose when I got pregnant since it's sulfate free. I have very fine hair so my products were volume focused. The shampoo and conditioner left my hair feeling like it was still dirty after showering. If I let my hair air dry after it also clumped up and felt like there was product that hadn't fully washed out. I used it for two months since I heard that it takes time for your natural hair oils to adjust to the product but it never got better and I just gave up.
