Acne Phage Serum

  • I just finished my first month with Phyla (serum only). At first, I noticed an immediate difference. My skin healed from blemishes faster and the more surface level ones decreased dramatically. I like the twist top on the dispenser. The issue I have is remembering to use it twice a day instead of once like the other Rx cream I've used for years, and if I forget, I'll break out. Phyla did help me incorporate it into my routine with my other cream, which was nice, so if you're concerned about being able to use your other skincare products, just reach out to them. They're helpful! I'll update this review after I get further into treatment.

  • This product is the longest I’ve ever had a skin care subscription because the three products really do work. You do have to be consistent and it can be tough when you run out of the solution before the next shipment arrives but it kicks butt. Would just like less moisturizer and more of that face wash and main solution.

  • As someone who has dealt with hormonal acne on and off, I've tried everything under the sun: from OTC to prescription, from topical to oral medications. To be clear, I've never had severe acne, but at certain points, I would say it has gotten up to moderate. Nothing has worked quite like this - even the prescription medications. I still get one or two new spots here and there, but the frequency of new pimples has decreased by a lot. It's pretty incredible that it's an OTC topical solution. I have been using Phyla for about 3 weeks now and plan to continue to see if these results stay consistent or improve. The issues that I have are price point, packaging, and gel. The packaging seems like a huge waste of plastic. I understand the need to market as premium/luxe when you are an OTC solution, but there has to be a better way than this. You would even think that given the size of the packaging, there might be a refillable aspect, but there isn't. The size and weight of it also make it difficult to travel with, which seems like an oversight when it is imperative to apply twice daily. The price is also prohibitive for most, although considering it is patented biotech, I understand that a company needs to recoup its research costs. Finally, the carrier gel pills under most of my skincare products (including sunscreens), which is very annoying during the daytime when I need to apply sunscreen. While gel is very popular for acne products, it would be interesting to offer a cream alternative with the same efficacy. As someone with a dry skin type, I know I would appreciate this.

  • Did not have a good experience on Phyla. First, they tell you to stop all other skincare products, instead of telling you what particular ingredients to avoid. I was skeptical, but since it's live actives, I did stop everything else. However, this probably contributed to my horrible breakouts. My acne was so inflamed and painful that I barely wanted to leave the house. Their support told me I was purging, so I gave it a full 3 months before I couldn't take it anymore. The breakouts unfortunately persisted for a while after I stopped. Their concept is very interesting, but as far as I can tell there have been NO peer-reviewed studies on topical phage therapy for acne (at least, not in human subjects). This brand is basically using its paying customers to research this potential treatment pathway, but without any of the ethics and support that is required in a real clinical study. They also make some dubious medical claims on their website, as detailed here: https://youtu.be/qW1DFdpvY9Q I have tried so many acne treatments and was desperate for something new, as many of us are. So I totally understand the urge to try it when you're down/breaking out. 💌 However, I think Phyla takes advantage of that feeling and is NOT worth the risk for people struggling with acne. I recommend instead just finding a derm you trust, and reading about treatment options somewhere like acne.org: https://www.acne.org/acne-treatments

  • I have been using the serum for about a month now and my hormonal acne is much smoother and clearer. My nodule like blemishes have shrunken and dried down to clogged pores that my aesthetician can easily remove. My skin texture is noticeably smoother and clearer. I love it so much, I upgraded from just the serum to the full system on subscription!
