Reviews mention

  • Gooey-centered, crisp-edged texture
  • Iconic chocolate chip walnut cookie
  • Generous, melty chocolate mix-ins
  • Quaint, friendly bakery experience
  • Overly sweet, cloying flavor
  • Dense, heavy cookie texture
  • Frozen versions notably less decadent
  • Limited, repetitive flavor selection

Levain Bakery earns glowing reviews as a destination for ultra-thick, gooey cookies that many call the best—especially the classic Chocolate Chip Walnut and Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip—yet feedback flags drawbacks like extreme sweetness, dense heaviness, and inconsistency versus frozen or shipped versions. Reviews also praise warm, fresh-from-the-oven texture, generous mix-ins, friendly shops, and standout breads, while noting limited flavors and that some cookies taste too rich, dry, or overhyped for certain palates.

  • Amazing! I love that these are now available in Whole Foods and Central Market. The store bought ones are smaller than the ones from the actual Levain Bakery, I like that they do not require baking.

  • Levain is a classic NYC institution. Cookies slap.

  • My absolute favorite bakery-style cookies in the whole world. I lived in NYC for years and regularly stopped at their store fronts to purchase. I ordered/shipped them to friends as gifts, and I've bought their frozen versions at Whole Foods and FoxTrot (Chicago) - not as good as in store, but can you really expect them to be? 10/10 recommend. Must stop in NYC - my favorite is the dark chocolate peanut butter. To. Die. For.

  • These are the best cookies. Hands down! We live near the bakery in DC and it is trouble. Whenever I have a hankering for a sweet treat, or need a dessert to bring to a party, Levain is our go to. The cookies are the right amount of crispy, soft, -- and they're especially great after heating them up for a few seconds.

  • I tried these cookies on a recent trip to NYC. Reminded me of early Mrs. Fields but with more sophistication and that east coast vibe. I don’t Ike dry chocolate chip cookies but these were righteous.

  • Delicious cookies! And so big

Maybe more flavor options would be fun! Or an option to warm the cookie right after you buy (in store).

  • Went to a brick and mortar store and got a cookie - it was good but not worth the hype

    over hyped

  • Levain bakery cookies are heavenly to the tastebuds. I like the idea of just warming them up and eating them.

    Feedback

Too high in calories. So good but not ideal to eat often.

  • It's literally the most heavenly cookie on planet earth, what more do you need to know? Crispy on the outside, chewy gooey on the inside, the end. Everyone needs to experience one in their lifetime.

    It's perfection.

  • Best cookie in NYC, hands down. It's a must-stop for me with every visit. 1000/10 recommend.

  • I have lived in NYC for over 25 years, so I have been fortunate to try Levain from their beginning. Though you can’t choose a baked good that will disappoint, Levain’s famous chocolate chip walnut cookies live up to the hype. The cookies transport you back to childhood. The anticipation from the scent of the cookies baking, sneaking a warm, fresh, gooey cookie from the cooling rack, the crispy edges and soft center are just a few of the nostalgic memories each bite will remind you about. We (my partner and I) have sent Levain cookies to loved ones, from Oregon to Florida, who no longer live in New York an miss the happiness of each bite.

  • Received a subscription to Cookie of the Month as a gift for the holidays. First set of 8 cookies arrived about two weeks ago. Beautifully packaged, very large cookies (an assortment of chocolate chip type cookies). Very nice presentation. That’s where the good news ends. I took one bite into these massive cookies and was completely disappointed. Biggest complaint: no flavor! They were flat and uninteresting. I looked at the rest of box and they just didn’t hold any appeal to try more. Such a shame as they are expensive. Maybe there’s something wrong with my taste buds, but I’m not impressed at all. Will be giving them away to friends and neighbors.

  • Bought the peppermint and chocolate 4 pk and the Fall assortment 12pk that had the chocolate chip walnut, peanut butter and chocolate, double chocolate, and a limited fall cookie that was close to a gingerbread with chocolate chips. Peppermint and chocolate 10/10 would 100% buy again Chocolate chip walnut 100/10- best chocolate chip cookie I've ever had. Even if you don't like walnuts try it. Chocolate and peanut butter 5/10- super disappointed as pnb & chocolate is my favorite combo. Ratio of pnb to chocolate was all wrong, way to much chocolate. Double chocolate 8/10- if you like chocolate this is for you Holiday fall limited edition cookie- 2/10 happen to be the 1st one I tried, was supper disappointed If you get these shipped w/ free shipping ( order over $79, I think) you end up paying g about $5.60 per cookie. These are huge one at time cookies. So not a bad price IMO. If you're paying for shipping at almost $20, totally not worth it as the price per cookie would be about $9 per cookie. I will say take the time to reheat in the oven per directions, 100% better than heating in microwave. I did freeze some per tge directions, but I haven't ate any if those to see how well they hold up. Over all would I buy again? Maybe, for a special occasion with free shipping. But only the "original" chocolate chip walnut ones

  • Excellence bakery. Delicious cookies. Do not buy the frozen pre baked ones. They should sell them unbaked.

  • My favorite cookies! The fresh cookies from the actual bakery are incomparable. The frozen ones are equally as good but so much smaller than the fresh ones.

    Feedback

Frozen cookies should be the same size as the fresh ones.

  • Love their cookies, especially their Oatmeal raisin, my favorite! Can't find any like this in France !

    Feedback

Different oatmeal cookie! They are delicious!

  • This one may be biased. I have loved this bakery for 10 years. The new stores can feel sterile and the frozen cookies don’t *quite* get to the original but they’re still better than any other cookie you will ever have

  • I LOVE a good cookie and crave them all the time. But I also happen to be very sensitive to sugar, which is the world's worst catch-22. Levain cookies have always looked so delicious with their huge mounds of dough and buttery color, so I was so excited when my mom brought one home from a special trip. But alas, the cookie was too sweet, not quite as soft and doughy as I'd like - more of a crumbly crunch. So this is one trend I'd pass on.

    Feedback

    Softer, chewier dough. Less sugar.

  • Delicious cookies. One of the best and worth the money.
