Reviews mention

  • Striking, instagrammable bottle design
  • Engaging, customizable quiz experience
  • Pleasant, long-lasting signature scents
  • Occasional effective detangling conditioner
  • Inconsistent, underwhelming formula performance
  • Overpowering, artificial fragrance options
  • Drying, low-slip curly conditioner
  • Residue buildup causing greasy roots

Function of Beauty earns polarized reviews: while customization, scents, and sleek packaging delight many, the formulas often perform like standard shampoos and can leave hair greasy, dry, or even shedding—so the brand is inconsistent rather than reliably good. Reviews also praise detangling conditioners and defined curls for some hair types, but cite overpowering/artificial fragrances, residue and build‑up, weak moisturization for textured hair, and faulty pumps or short straws as recurring drawbacks.

  • Super fun to design & I loved the smell. Just not worth the $$ — I’ll be sticking with drugstore shampoo.

  • So the experience is really cool, the website is slick, aesthetic amazing and the packaging is really instagrammable, I just think the shampoo per se did not do much to my hair and the price is too high for me.

  • Love all the different options they have when it comes to hair texture for the shampoo and conditioner. Smells great, and leaves my hair feeling soft AND affordable!

  • I was allergic to the product and it didn't really do anything for my hair

  • I did this customization and there was nothing special about it. I didn’t love it and it wasn’t doing the best for my hair so I just didn’t finnish the bottles and I gave them to my mom to use the rest because she uses anything.

  • These hair products fine, but they aren't particularly special even tho they are tailored to your hair needs and are a bit overpriced for what they offer.

  • To date worst product I’ve ever used. My hair was so gross and waxy and stringy and oily all at once. For something that was customized for me, this was the biggest disappointment.

  • I purchased the custom haircare routine from function of beauty, and ever time I use it, I feel fancy. My only complaint would be that the products are a little pricey, but for a custom product, they’re not too bad. The wide variety of scents and colors makes this experience worth the buy. Not only that, but my hair texture has greatly improved after use .

  • Quero testar essa Marca! E estou apaixonada pela embalagem, minha votação é pela embalagem!

  • Love the product just wish there was more in store variety ya know

  • I wouldn't go as far as saying I advise against them; however, I think for the price you pay, their priority should not be letting you customize the colors of the shampoo and conditioner. I love the appeal; I think that the quality could improve. I love how customized you can get; it is amazing. I just can't get over that my hair was duller. I am sad because I loved so many parts of their design. It just didn't work for my hair.

  • I found function of beauty to work better than prose but I still think it wasn’t worth the money. I didn’t find the customization was as effective as some drug store products that I keep going back to. I did enjoy that the bottles were reusable and the product smelled great!

  • I don't really like the way that my hair feels when using these products. I have only tried the customized ones.

  • Definitely way overhyped in my opinion. I like it for its aesthetic but its way to overpriced for a shampoo and conditioner

  • I’ve used the shampoo/conditioner and also enjoy the custom face serum. It’s fun and feels like a treat to have something created just for you.

  • I ordered this YEARS ago off of a Facebook ad and it accidentally charged me THREE times but I give this company major props I contacted them as soon as I realized and they immediately resolved it. I hope that’s still the case with customer service. The product itself was less than impressive. I have fine curly hair and the shampoo dried it out really badly and the conditioner didn’t have any moisturizing staying power. Not worth the splurge to me.

  • After seeing tens of YouTubers rave about this brand, I finally caved and tried it out. I love the idea of being able to customize your own shampoo and conditioner, and thought the pear scent was really nice! Being able to get your name on the bottle? So cute! Unfortunately, I just don't think it harmed nor bettered my hair at all, and I was really looking for a product that would get my curls looking healthier. I tried their curl definition and anti-frizz boosters from Target as well, and was also disappointed. I really, really want to love this brand, but so far it's a no go:(.

  • I thought it was cool to do the personalization and have my name on the bottle. But that’s kind of where it ends. The shampoo and conditioner didn’t damage my hair or anything but they didn’t make it better than it already was. Nothing spectacular so not worth the extra bucks. You can find better for the money.
