Reviews mention

  • Rich umami-forward flavor profile
  • Versatile marinade-and-finisher sauce
  • Clean, simple ingredient list
  • Attractive, satisfying bottle design
  • Overly sweet flavor notes
  • Thin, runny sauce consistency
  • Clog-prone twist-top nozzle
  • Mild heat in spicy variant

Bachan’s earns enthusiastic reviews for delivering deeply savory, Japanese-inspired barbecue sauces that elevate everything from rice bowls and salmon to stir-fries, with standouts like Original, Yuzu, Miso, and Hot & Spicy. Reviews also surface consistent drawbacks: the sauce runs thin and can taste overly sweet, and the twist-top nozzle frequently clogs; some wish for bolder heat or more gluten-free variants—strong reasons to sample flavors before committing.

  • Bachan's sauce is amazing! I use the original instead of soy sauce all the time. I've repurchased numerous times!

  • OMG! this is so so so good i love it i eat it on everything! i am gluten free and i love the gf sauce! i'm so glad that they have a option for people with gluten allergy but i wish all the sauces were available in gluten free form! but its still a great sauce.

  • This Japanese Barbeque sauce reminds me of the days in japan where Id go out to eat in the late nights in the streets of tokyo. It brings so much memories and absolutely love the flavor! Every time I run out of this sauce I tend to keep buying it over and over again.

  • So good - I always have it in my fridge. Over eggs, meat, rice... what doesn't it go with?

  • Bought a huge bottle of this at Costco and oh my god! I’ve put this sauce on just about everything. It’s so delicious, has a great deep flavor, and cute packaging. I wish it was just a litttleeee bit thicker so it was more of a dipping sauce than a liquidy marinade. Still great to drizzle on practically anything.

  • There's a restaurant that I used to go to when I lived in Japan that had this incredible sauce. I was sad when we moved because I knew how much I would miss. I saw a friend (who also lived in Japan for some time) post about Bachan's and I just KNEW I had to give their sauce a try. I'm so glad I did because it's very reminiscent of the sauce that I loved at that restaurant. My only gripe, I wish the spicy one was a tad bit more spicy!

  • Really delicious sauce that is good on meats and veggies, but also just on some hot white rice!

  • Was excited to discover this sauce, and a gluten free version, at a local bodega and love it! I appreciate how simple the ingredients are - it’s like something I could make at home but know I never will. We use this for salmon, rice dishes, chicken, etc - all really easy and delicious

I’ve recently had some trouble getting it to come out of the nozzle like some others have mentioned

  • The Japanese BBQ sauce is the little engine that could! I bought this as an impulse buy on vacation in a kitchen goods store a year ago, and whenever I'm making a dish that is just missing a little something, this sauce really steps up. I appreciate the simple ingredients and fun packaging, too.

  • Love the original sauce it has that classic Asian flavor you look for in a dish. Like the spicy sauce, but can’t go wrong with the original even my 5 year old loves it.

I always seek to have trouble with the twist top dispenser, it always clogs. Other than that the products are great in size and shape and fit well in the refrigerator.

  • The flavor of this is yummy, and it's an easy way to add flavor to simple dishes. One thing to note: this sauce is runnier than a typical "American" barbeque sauce. It definitely needs to be cooked down. Great packaging!

  • I bought this in bulk - so yummy and versatile.

It’s a little sweet for my taste

  • This sauce is SO good - and the fact they have a gluten free option makes me so happy. My favorite dish to use it with is salmon and rice.

  • It tastes so good! Eat it with anything especially as a dipping sauce.

  • Bachan's has quickly become a go-to condiment in my kitchen! The flavor is great, I've tried both the original and gluten-free versions and the taste is very consistent. It's really versatile — I've used it in stir fries, salads, sandwiches. I recommend if you're looking to add umami to any dish!! I am a fan of the lighter consistency, but it's a lighter sauce than your typical thick barbecue sauce.

    No notes. Love it.

  • The sauce is more versatile than I expected. It’s pretty great on any meat.

    No improvement necessary.

  • The hot and spicy Japanese Barbecue sauce is tangy, saucy, and adds the perfect amount of heat! I've used it for stir fry, fried tofu, grilled veggies, and even chicken nuggets.

  • I grabbed the Honey Barbecue flavor on a whim at Target and I am so glad I did. It’s now my go-to for salmon marinades and rice bowls. Will definitely be buying again.

  • Delicious! Became a must-have staple after the first bottle; elevates so many types of food to new levels.

  • Great sauce! Could eat a giant bowl of rice with just this (and ideally some Kewpie). I’ve also used this in marinades, and particularly love the Yuzu flavor and how that adds depth to fish and chicken.

Cost is a bit high, but I received as a gift and was delighted.
