23andMe earns largely positive reviews for delivering engaging ancestry mapping, robust health predisposition reports, and an intuitive app that keeps updating insights; it clearly works for users seeking genetic context and family connections. However, reviews flag significant drawbacks: recurring upsells/subscriptions, uneven depth for non‑European health traits, occasional confusing interfaces, slow results for some, and serious privacy concerns including data selling and breaches.

23andMe has been really fun to have - I've learned so much about my ancestry and it was really cool to have my other family members submit their info and compare our different genetic origins. It was also cool to see some info about me such as caffeine sensitivity and allergies. It was weirdly really accurate!
I used them once and regretted it after they didn't secure your data correctly. Plus you have no idea what they are doing with your genetic dna once it is collected in your hands. It was interesting to learn about my ancestry but now I am worried that they have my info.
Not trustworthy. I did a DNA kit and the info was nothing surprising. Presented well; however, they have since had a data breach and waited to report it and have tried to downplay it. Have since requested all my info be deleted...
This was a lot of fun and even helped reconnect with a distant family member.
Really enjoy seeing my health stats and family connections. They keep coming out with upgrades though that require more payments. But the genetic insights let me know what I'm predisposed to so I can keep an eye on if I see signs/symptoms.
Waste of time and money. Report told me nothing special except my genetic background. No sure what to do with this report.

easy and helpful!
Pros: Learning about your genetics is entertaining. When they first came out, they provided more health-related data than the other large DNA test co, Ancestry, which I appreciated. Cons: they sell your data. They imply that there's a lot more info provided than there really is, relative to the amount of info in our DNA. What you get is really just a sliver. Bottom line: I had genetic testing done through my doctor recently. If I do more testing "at home," it will be with a company with better privacy policies, who don't sell our most personal info to large corporations.
I completed a 23andme kit at the recommendation of my naturopath. It was easy to collect the DNA, and a fairly quick turnaround to get my results. The results were displayed in a way that was easy to understand. I love having this improved knowledge of where I come from and my genes. It is empowering! I also think that based on everything that you are able to learn about yourself, the pricing is relatively reasonable.

I found out so much about myself. My dad left before I was born so I don’t know anything about him or that side of me. When my husband bought this for me for Christmas, the results helped me to fill in some (not all) blank spots in my life. I love 23 and me. Totally worth every penny. Thank you 23 and me!
I came to 23&Me for several reasons, but the main factor is that it provides the best health DNA profile on the market. I've followed them as a company for years, reading about their targeted research, and it really is impressive. They've directly contributed to breakthrough treatments and improving diagnostics in the medical field. They also provide a nice product to their customers, which is always being improved upon. Crucially, the DNA profile they provide includes a) The literal reading of your DNA (such as if you have a certain mutation) b) Your statistical predisposition for disease based on community response (ie, measuring likelihood based on the *fully optional* quiz responses of those people who share your DNA) and c) Tailored health management suggestions, including prompts for what to discuss with your doctor (and why), optional lifestyle or habit changes, etc. There are also novelty features, such as "% Neanderthal" and "Characteristics Likelihood" (red hair or feckless). I have had important discussions with my own doctors based on certain of my 23&Me results. They have answered some questions, raised others, and ultimately helped us narrow down a tailored plan for what annual checkups I need in the immediate, and what I can likely deprioritize.

This is also a genealogical service, although I would say it is not as robust as its biggest competitors when it comes to tree building/management or historical data-pulling. It is difficult to say which service provides the best estimate of an "ethnicity profile" ... they are all very similar within a small margin of error, and all occasionally make an update that appears nonsensical. Some sites that deal in genealogy exclusively cost much less than 23&me at their entry price, and consequently have a much larger pool of individuals from which to estimate ethnicity based on DNA. Certain other sites may also have better representation (in their pool) of historically underrepresented communities. However, across the board this feature is still rather speculative, and for myself it was not my first priority in purchasing the product.

Being an international adoptee, it was important to me to determine what my genetic roots are, to find family members, and to see which health traits or genetics I carry. I wasn’t very impressed with the health aspect of it after purchasing the health add-on. It really only told me that I was less likely to have detached earlobes and other things that I already knew about myself because it was obvious. For the price I would say it’s interesting to know what your ancestry is, but the health add-on is not worth it.

Pretty fun and cool experience to learn an about your DNA/ancestry. Process was super simple and results came fairly quick. I like how your results change/become more accurate over time as the technology improves.
Super interesting process to learn about things I'd never know to investigate. The reports are really thorough and intriguing, and the random family connections are kind of a trip. Most of my connections are third and fourth cousins, so no one I would ever know if I saw them on the street but still kind of cool to see your lineage out in the world. I have a lot of chronic health issues, so I was particularly interested in the screening results. Though I know it's not a replacement for medical advice, it was reassuring to see I didn't trigger any positives for major health scare issues. The couple that did come back with elevated risk are things I can now keep a closer eye on, which is cool to be able to see.

The collection process was really easy. It took quite a while to get results back, but once I did, I had fun combing through all the reports and learning about myself in a different way.

I loved finding out all about my health and genetic predispositions. It provided me some piece of mind knowing what to look out for. It was also fun knowing that there were genetic reasons behind me not liking cilantro, etc.

I wish I could actually find out my countries of origin instead of that I was just 100% Ashkenazi Jewish.
Seamless experience from ordering, to collection and analysis. Wonderful to be able to have a personal analysis of your DNA.
The kits are well made and extremely easy to use. Results don't take too long and they are constantly updating data on you even after you send in the sample. It's a super cool way to learn about your ancestry and health metrics.
I used 23 and me and my results only said I was 99% Ashkenazi Jewish. I knew this.

I would have liked to know exactly where I was from, not the cultural group to which I already know I am a part of. Kind of a fail.

Super easy to complete the kit, and the turn around was very fast. My results came back with nothing too overly interesting, but it was neat to see the breakdown and insights it provided. Emails providing additional insights and new results have continued every few weeks since getting the results, which is nice that it is not a one and done, never hear from us again type of company.

Fun little thing to do with family, definitely exciting to see the 'genealogy' of our DNA. My parents like doing the surveys and learning a little more about their genetic traits like hairline, taste, and other things which are influenced by dna. The packaging is good and it's easy, albeit a bit gross to do the 'dna collection'.
