I like Somos for their Mexican-inspired foods. I appreciate their microwaveable rice packages that offer a quick and simple solution to rice needs while including great Mexican flavorings. The cilantro lime flavor is my favorite, as it is not overpowering in flavor.
I’ve been curious about the brand but didn’t have a reason to try it until the thingtesting offer. Both products were decent. Maybe I’ll try their Salsa Macha at some point.
While I wouldn't say I was blown away by either of the two flavors I tried, SOMOS rice pouches are certainly tasty. The Mexican Street Corn White Rice had a hint of sweetness and a very mild zing, whereas the Poblano Brown Rice w/ Spinach and Jalapeños had, as the peppers might signal, a bit more heat (though it was by no means overpowering). In a head-to-head taste test, I preferred the natural sugariness and slight creaminess of the Mexican street corn, while my wife liked the authentic taste of the poblano brown rice. All in all, I'd say they were a win-win and, while I probably won't be buying them regularly (rice is easy enough to make), are good alternatives for anyone in a time pinch (they are ready to serve after being microwaved for a minute and a half).
This brand caught my eye for its bold and authentic look. I tried the 90 second microwaveable Mexican Brown Rice with peppers and onions in red salsa. It came our with a good texture, and the added ingredients made it taste like it was straight from a restaurant.

SOMOS was founded by a group of three friends who grew up in Mexico eating chilaquiles, cooking tacos, and loving their moms’ home cooking. When we came to the United States, we enjoyed meeting up with friends at great Mexican restaurants, but we were disappointed with the options available for creating truly delicious Mexican meals at home. Together, we combined our Mexican heritage and our years of experience in the food community to create ready-to-eat foods that honor Mexico’s rich culinary traditions.
