  • I decided to buy my first cast iron pan as I wanted something versatile (I am looking to own as few kitchen items as possible.) I have never used cast iron before so frankly my review is probably more reflective of that than necessarily Field. It would be helpful if they could provide a bit more information about how to care for cast iron. I felt the initial information was pretty limited. It is a very sturdy built pan and I’m looking forward to using it more as the seasoning increases (as of now, the seasoning is still developing and it’s not nonstick.) I will just overall say I am not sure that I am a fan of the maintenance required for cast iron. Time will tell!

  • Field makes world-class cast iron. I've had my #8 skillet for about five years now, and it's my favorite piece of kitchen gear. While expensive, there is a clear different in quality between Field and big-box brands like Lodge. I'm just waiting for a bigger kitchen before I buy the Dutch Oven, a bigger skillet, and maybe a griddle pan in the future. Highly recommend.

In their own words

Field Company is a small, family-run business that believes in restoring a more meaningful connection to the things we own. We see so many folks trapped in cycles of buying disposable items they can't repair, can't understand, and ultimately don't value. Our answer to this is to make great tools that get better over time, create the satisfaction of a job well done, and get passed down from one kitchen to the next. It all started with a question—why don't they make cast iron like they used to? As brothers, we grew up with our mother's vintage cast iron pans. When we purchased our own as adults, we were struck by the difference. Older cast iron was so much smoother, lighter, and easier to use. We embarked on a quest to understand why, visiting foundries, working with metallurgists, studying vintage pans, and deconstructing classics to rediscover their secrets. After countless prototypes, we created the Field Skillet, which raised $1.6 million in our 2016 Kickstarter. Today, you can purchase our cast iron and related tools on our website fieldcompany.com, where we offer a 45-day trial to cook with our cast iron, as well as a lifetime warranty should you fall in love with it.
