Reviews mention

  • Crisp camera imagery
  • Engaging video postcards
  • Refined physical design
  • Helpful species identification
  • Short battery longevity
  • Cumbersome app navigation
  • Finicky network pairing
  • Awkward perch ergonomics

Bird Buddy delights many reviewers with crisp photos, engaging video “postcards,” and an elegant, well-designed feeder-camera system that helps identify species and brings backyard birdlife up close. Reviews also flag persistent weaknesses: short battery life without the Solar Roof, finicky setup and pairing (especially with some mesh networks), clunky app flows, sporadic missed captures, and inconsistent or slow support; when it works, it’s magical, but reliability and ergonomics vary widely.

  • I love my bird Buddy so much I purchased a second one - I cannot wait until the hummingbird is available. I was so excited when I got my first visitor and not it’s my slow down and relax time to see who has come to visit. I’ve always thought that SC has some of the most interesting and beautiful birds and now I have proof. Our cardinals are wonderful.

  • Love that I can see what birds are coming to my yard and feeders. Wish the videos weren’t so long, though. And you can see birds at the BirdBuddy sometimes, but it doesn’t capture them.

  • I received the Bird Buddy as a gift. I would love to purchase more but the pricing is a bit hard to swallow. After initial installation, the bird buddy would not activate when visitors arrived. It took a software update that came available almost 5 weeks later before the camera would activate. I could physically see birds in the feeder but the camera wouldn't recognize them. Following the update this sucker came alive. I'm extremely pleased with how it works. Outside of telephoto lenses, you can't get this intimate with bird-life. The detail that pops from the Bird Buddy images is astounding. Birding was a minor hobby of mine but this thing has ratcheted it to a new level. The camera doesn't always capture the sharpest of images but I've also never tried to get a bird to sit still for a photoshoot. Collecting bird species through the Bird Buddy is my new distraction.

  • I love my bird buddy. I feel I really get to see and know the birds that come to my feeder and I can improve how I feed them. It has really helped my identification skills as well. I do wish the plastic feed door in back was sturdier and easier to fill, but that does not stop me from giving a highly recommend for Bird Buddy.

  • My review would have been a 3.5 because the battery needs to be charged every 2-3 weeks but we just purchased the solar roof and it’s a game changer!!!! We love our bird buddy.

  • I love my Bird Buddy! It’s great to see, hear, and identify birds up close, it’s like having your own nature channel! With the solar roof, it has been great and never needs charging either!

  • Bird Buddy is awesome! It gives an up close and personal view of our birdy friends along with audio! The birds (and non birds) are full of personality. Postcards quickly became the highlight of my day. I found the facebook group kind and helpful with ideas to attract other birds and deal with problems of big birds or squirrels.

  • Absolutely love my Bird Buddy. Super easy to install. Once I added the solar roof it stays charged and I only have to take it down to clean. The app is very easy to use and they are constantly improving it. It’s so much fun to see the birds in action!

  • I am having so much fun with my Bird Buddy. I received it as a gift and it has been great. Clear pictures and it even has sound with the videos. It was easy to set up and the solar roof is definitely worth it. I’ve never had to bring it into the house to charge!

  • I received Bird Buddy as a gift and absolutely LOVE IT! I added the solar charger and everything has worked great. No issues whatsoever! The app is easy to use and the camera uses your Wi-Fi to connect, so you’ll want to make sure your Wi-Fi reaches that part of your yard. It’s been so much fun to get “postcards” from my feeder and to see videos of birds from around the world in the app and on their social.

  • I love my Bird Buddy. I was an original kickstarter, and it took a long time to finally arrive, but the team was great to keep us updated on their struggles and their progress. Once I received my BB, I found the set-up instructions were not clear, and required that I go online to figure out how to get started. This might be a problem for anyone who is not confident with computers. I had a few issues getting set up, pairing to my internet, etc. but once I got that sorted out, it has been so much fun! The online Facebook group that BB created has been very helpful for problem solving, and the community of users are also great! I have not had to contact BB for any reason, but I do appreciate that they provide updates about what they are working on, and they respond to user concerns and requests for changes by updating the firmware and the app. I created and added my own perch after seeing photos of what some others had done, as the landing pad is not the best. Many birds seem to prefer a perch that gives them something to grasp.

  • I preordered my BirdBuddy so I had to wait several months in anticipation of its arrival. It did not disappoint! Set up is pretty simple if you follow the steps. That said, if you have an issue, the customer service is pretty good but it is not immediate. It was part of a kickstarter so they are continually updating and improving based on feedback. I was so eager to start seeing birds, but it does take awhile for birds to find the feeder in the summer (food is plentiful everywhere in the summer). There's a nice community of BirdBuddy owners so it's nice to learn tips and tricks from them--and it's great to see birds from everyone else's feeders Every time I share pics from my Bird Buddy, people message me and ask me what camera and feeder system I've got, Caveat: you do need wi-fi and a smart phone so this might not work well for your great grandma who does not have a smart phone.

  • Backed this on Kickstarter and I’m really glad I did. I enjoyed birds in my yard before getting my Bird Buddy, but rarely saw their faces when they were feeding. Now I get videos with sound as well as stills. The evolution of the product and the online community have been so positive an experience for me that I bought a second one and ordered a hummingbird feeder as well! Yes, it can be a bit glitchy but it’s new and customer service is very responsive and helpful. I’ve discovered birds I didn’t even know I had in my yard! I’m smitten and sold, and I’ve happily recommended Bird Buddy to my friends, who are also pleased (if they weren’t, they’d tell me!).

  • LOVE it. Super easy install and I started receiving post cards the vert next day. So fun. Love the pictures. The video, the sound and all the little facts. I also love seeing everyone else's buddies.

  • I was an original bird buddy back. As soon as I saw it in the first hour on kickstarter my fingers took “flight” and I ordered one. I will preface this to say I have backed almost 200 campaigns. Some stole the money, and provided no updates/product, some delivered almost cartoonish garbage that I keep only for a laugh. Birdbuddy arrived incredibly well packaged. I take this as a very good initial sign. If a company cares about how its products holds up in shipping and its first glance presentation, generally it translates to a better product overall. The bird buddy is well made, sturdy and I have liked it so much some of my friends now own them based upon my feedback. We’re there delays and growing pains? Absolutely! They never hid this or denied it. But when I was cranky having to keep plugging it to despite a solar roof they would respond saying they were on it. And you know what? Each subsequent app release showed they were keeping their word. I love my bird buddy, and finally can identify some birds by sight. It can be a good teacher if you will let it. If you want perfect, skip kickstarter. It’s just not for you. The nature of campaigns if you will need to “buckle up”, but my experience is things do smooth out. Rest assured if you purchase a bird buddy that has seen a number of kinks worked out and a company that is responsive if you only are patient with you. They want to deliver a great product and a great experience. They are now delivering this.

  • I love my bird buddy. It gives me an extra insight into what happens in my garden. I don't often have time to sit and watch the birds. I love it when I do so this feeder and app give me that happy feeling from the comfort of my sofa or on a break on a busy day at work. Thanks BirdBuddy

The app is easy to use and is being improved all the time with input and feedback from users. The AI is rarely confused with the birds I see.

    Invested in Bird Buddy
  • I looked forward to getting my Bird Buddy for a very long time. It has exceeded my expectations in every way. Not just the hardware and the app - which are both awesome, but the developers are incredibly invested in improving the product and how it serves their customers. I've never dealt with a company that really cares about the experience of their customers like this group does, and it shows in the ongoing product developments that they continue to deliver months after delivery.

Be sure to invest in the solar panel to recharge your Bird Buddy. As long as I have mine pointed toward the southwest I don't have to bring it in to recharge it. As with all feeders, do all you can to keep large animals away. You don't want this to go crashing to the ground. It is VERY well made, but take the extra time and effort to safeguard it. PS - really cool product for the whole family!!!!

  • Love, love, love my Bird Buddy! My 4 year old grandson will stop anything he is doing to open a bird visit notification. He’s learning about sharing our yard, who visits us and taking turns opening the Bird Buddy post cards. Looking forward to the new products as well.

    Feedback

No complaints, emails to customer service were returned promptly with excellent instructions.

  • I just love it ! I have pictures of birds that I never saw before in my yard, and now with the start of the migration, I am just so excited and the pictures quality is really good.

I am impressed with the continuing upgrade/improving of the product, it get better and better.

  • My kids gave this to me as a birthday present. It took a few months to arrive but it was well worth the wait! I absolutely love it. Everyone does! They are taking suggestions from everyone and making some great updates and tweaks. If you love birds you will love a Bird Buddy!
