  • What’s old is new again (with parental controls). I got Tin Can for my kids (ages 6 and 8) for Christmas and upgraded to the $9.99/month Party Plan so they could call grandparents and other family members who don’t have smartphones. Their immediate instinct was to start dialing random numbers and doing prank calls — which is exactly where Tin Can shines. They can only call approved numbers, and that restriction is really the value here. The first call my older child made to a grandparent was incredibly sweet and focused. Unlike FaceTime, there were no filters, no staring at themselves, no distractions — just an actual conversation. That alone made it feel worth it. Is it a little gimmicky and buggy? Yes. Is the physical phone itself kind of mediocre? Also yes (though I assume it’ll improve). But I love the idea of a restricted landline. A friend with a traditional landline had to disconnect it because of nonstop telemarketers, so the parental controls are clearly what you’re paying for. Overall, it feels like a thoughtful, modern take on something old-school — and I’m excited to have it in our house.

  • OK, so I love the concept and I love the look, but I don’t like the customer service because from the beginning we received a very flimsy white cord. That was the cord that connected it to the wall. It was cheaper than the ones I buy when I’m really stuck and I don’t have one and I’m in like the desert driving through some random gas station and I get one of those cheapies made in China where I almost have to buy two of them and return them before one works right off the bat. So, after waiting almost 4 months for our Tin Can phone, this cord gave out within the first two months, and then really gave out last month, but simultaneously, the Tin Can Wi-Fi connection went down, so we’re all scrambling around wondering why our phones aren’t working in our small community for our children so they can talk thinking it’s all us and our phones are not working. Meanwhile, if Tin Can just sent out some kind of communication via email announcing the Wi-Fi is down and we all need to reboot, we could’ve all rebooted instead of all having to call in individually thinking we have a faulty product. So those are two major things that made it very frustrating and, now, after two days dealing with the company, maybe three, and at least an hour and a half of my time directly spending on this, they continue to stall exchanging the cord. It’s ridiculous and now that I went onto to review all the other reviews it seems to be the same case for many so I am going to simply replace it myself and be very frustrated with this group because it has not been positive . Customer Service to wait four months for a product that breaks within two months; not cool. I would look for a used one online if you can because I’m foreseeing that a lot of of them are going to be recycled in the secondary market, but it is a great way to stay off of screen time with children and, hopefully, maybe a better company will develop one. Where is Shark Tank when you need it! In summary, great phone concept terrible customer service. They address everything immediately without addressing it, so you feel like you’re getting attention but you’re not getting anywhere. Frustrated in Florida
