Swiff Spray makes a non-toxic, sustainable deodorant spray for your clothes and other household items

SWIFF was born out of a need and a desire for odor protection that didn't need to go on skin. Naturally inquisitive, we created a safe plant-based coating to protect against odors for a ridiculously long time!

After moving to Tokyo during the pandemic to research antimicrobial coatings, our founders Susanna & Dr. JJ Richardson noticed that JJ's clothes smelled after his daily commute. They began creating a safe and sustainable spray for clothes that stops odors at their source based off of JJ's research at the University of Tokyo into antimicrobial coatings for clothes. Trialing formulations on their own clothes, they quickly found the ideal ingredients that were safe, sustainable, and importantly, highly effective in neutralizing odor-causers. They designed a new type of bottle to allow SWIFF to be applied at home and started testing it with friends and family around the world.

I have a passion for cutting-edge research. Fortunate to have lived in 7 different countries spanning 4 continents, I've seen different approaches to life and science! From hot humid Florida nights, to scorching days in Australia, I've sweated and smelled my fair share. I have allergies to chemicals present in deodorants and colognes, so I needed a way to safely stay fresh in harsh environments. I also wanted to help create a world with fewer chemicals for my son to grow up in. With help from my incredible wife, I dedicated years to researching the technology behind SWIFF, so that we could live our lives with peace of mind, and now you can, too.

According to a recent Stanford study, I'm in the top 1% of scientists alive(PLoS Biology 18.10 (2020): e3000918.) and one of the most productive scientists in the world under the age of 35. I've published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles, and you can see a comprehensive list of my publications here.

I've experienced different cultures and ways of life that have taught me that sometimes simplicity is the most elegant solution. I am inspired to create real-world products that solve real-world issues.

I was born and raised in Australia, studied a BA and MA at Monash University, and have lived in numerous countries. I have also worked for non-profits and started up different ventures where I could apply my creativity and vision to help others.

Many people don't know that it normally takes 10 years for a breakthrough discovery to start benefitting the public. We did it in 8 years!

I have used it for fabric couches, mattresses, a baby car seat, a baby pram and the dog bed.

SWIFF has worked wonders for me, which is why we spun it out as a product in the first place. I'm Dr. JJ Richardson and tested SWIFF on myself, it worked so well my wife helped me turn it into a product and we shared it with friend and family around the world to see if it worked well. I still use it for all my clothes, shoes, socks, bath mats, shower grout, and more.

So this is a biased review, but reflects our personal experience and all the experience of our hundreds of testers and customers.

Totally obssessed with SWIFF spray. Very surprised at how well it works. I sprayed some tshirts that no matter what I do always smell at the end of the day. I sprayed Swiff and had NO SMELL at all even after a wash. I've been telling all my friends about this product. On top of it, their customer service is amazing, very kind people. I highly recommend this to anyone!

I wish there was a scent and also a larger spray bottle. This is now a staple in our house now.

My partner is a letter carrier so a lot of hot days outside and a lot more loads of laundry to keep the clothes at least smelling clean. We tried Swiff out on the armpit area and honestly? It stood up to the test.

I sprayed Swiff and had NO SMELL at all even after a wash. I've been telling all my friends about this product. 

The only thing is that it is only water and gall nut extract, which seems cheap to manufacture.

It works pretty well! It is portable and seems to work on clothing.

Definitely a larger product for the price. Even at the discounted price, it's still quite expensive for what it is. I would not pay the msrp for this. 

I sprayed it on one T shirt, and it works wonders. I've worn the same shirt for two days and it still doesn't smell. However because the bottle is so small and requires 10 sprays, one shirt has used up about 1/6 of the product. That means I can only use this 5 or 6 more times. I would save this product for clothing you don't want washed often. The picture shows how much is left after one use. 

I can imagine a larger refillable size would be nice, something more eco-friendly for packaging down the line

It does work in a pinch! Worked on my partner's clothes mainly since he sweats more. 

There are a couple of things that would keep me from investing long-term. I know it's not the norm but spraying this on the clothes of a 6'5" man with a muscular build takes a lot of product. This = $$$$. 

Also, it doesn't seem to quite last the advertised 15 washes but the fact that it lasted for even a few is a near-miracle!

My husband works out HARD. And he sweats just as hard. And for some reason, he has this idea that his clothes won't smell when he tosses them into a growing pile of equally-sweaty clothes. This stuff works. It doesn't mask the smell, it has no detectable scent at all. It seems to eliminate it. 

I wish there'd be clearer instructions on which nozzle to spray first just printed onto the bottle itself. Obviously a little more contents would be great but I don't see myself going through the whole bottle anytime soon.

I've only used it on my pillowcase but it looks promising! I use a silk pillowcase and don't want to wash it so often since it's so delicate but using SWIFF let's me stretch more time between washes.

I want to trust the size will last a while...but I'm skeptical.

Thrilled this exists! I'm unsure.what happen, but after a trip I came home and the couch smelled...off. I asked housemates if anything happened, and they were just as confused. I ordered swiff to see if it might shift things, and happy to report it has! Something clearly must have rubbed off on the fabric, but the sprays I think did the trick! 

Very interesting idea! Kept me smelling fresh all day.

I wouldn’t say this product lasted throughout multiple washes, but it definitely helps my deodorant work better. 

I like that it doesn’t stain my clothes.

It is not clear from the packaging if there needs to be a certain order to spraying clothes. I just checked the website and it says to spray the silver and then the plant antioxidant, so it seems there might be a specific order but perhaps it is not too important. I also wish the packaging said what the website says where you can do 5-10 sprays of each liquid, instead of only 10 like the package says. 10 times is a lot when there isn't too much liquid included and one bottle is $30!

This is definitely an item that I needed in my life. For many years I have had to deal with hyperhidrosis, and with that came many ruined shirts that no matter how often they were washed had a smell. This is not only embarrassing but meant I would have to buy new shirts quite often. So obviously I was super ecstatic to hear about a product like Swiff. Could this solve my problems? From my few times testing the product, I think it is pretty good at doing its job! I have tested it on a few problematic shirts and from what I can tell, the smell has gone away for the most part. And that to me is amazing since no matter what I did when the shirts got cleaned the smell would remain. I plan to use Swiff a bunch more whenever needed.

I may not be the audience for this product, but I didn't love it. It did block the smell, but left me feeling gross and was not a replacement for my regular deodorant. 

Boom! Goodbye sneaker smell. I love how portable and efficient this product is. Although it's on the pricey side, it works well and is worth it.

I'm really conflicted about this product. On the one hand, as a frequent traveler, I think its a great idea and would be super useful to get an extra day out of a tee shirt when laundry facilities are unavailable. 

I both love and hate the packaging. I like that its small enough to get tossed in my TSA-friendly liquids bag, I hate that it feels like a massive waste of plastic. 

As far as the marketing, I take particular issue with the claim this it is "chemical free' which is patently false and an absurd thing to claim. Im as likely as anyone to try to avoid putting harmful substances on or near my skin, but *literally everything is a chemical*. It really undermines any trust I have in the creators of the product to provide a sound, safe product. 

I get the vibe and appreciate the intent, but all-in-all this product just gets a big eye-roll from me. 

I was able to snag this in a thingdrop and loved it! I spray it on all my workout clothes before using and it does a great job of masking any odor. I say its worth the hype!

I tried this after coming across it on Thingtesting and was pleasantly surprised! I use natural deodorant because aluminum irritates my skin, and this helped keep my clothes smelling fresh throughout the day. 

I actually really like it but the product is too small in its current format. I know it’s meant for traveling, but I think the product would be better served in a bigger container, almost like febreeze? That kind of use case (ie bigger bottle post-laundry or as part of a cleaning routine) makes more sense imo, even if at a (justifiably) higher price point.

Just used this for the first time after a workout.  So far, it has been great and I recommend.

Yes, it works really well. Yes, it's kinda a lifesaver. But it's egregiously expensive and the packaging, though cute, is very wasteful.
