Material Reviews

Best of Thingtesting4.7

Material earns strong reviews for beautiful, durable kitchen tools that perform—sharp Japanese-steel knives, evenly heating copper-core and nonstick pans, and reBoard/MK Free Board cutting boards praised for easy cleaning, vibrant colors, and sustainability—yet feedback flags drawbacks like reBoard warping in dishwashers, occasional slipperiness, knife dulling for some users, and nonstick scratching at high heat. Overall, Material is good if you value design-forward, functional pieces and can accommodate the care nuances noted by reviewers.

  • I've been looking to replace my plastic OXO cutting boards, but am not in love with wooden cutting boards because they're a little too high maintenance. I found the MK Free Boards through Thingtesting and I love them so far. I love how big and easy to clean they are.

  • Better than plastic! Finally I cannot even count the number of cutting boards I have cycled through over the years. Plastic was the first to go for the obvious reason—microplastics. A beautiful wooden one came next, but no matter how much I scrubbed, I never felt it was truly clean. Then I tried metal. It looked chic, yes, but the grating sound of a knife against steel made it unbearable. I even bought more wood, this time bamboo, each promising to be different, yet none delivered. Then I discovered the Material Kitchen MK Free Board. Made from a plant-based biocomposite of natural clay minerals. It looks and feels like plastic but is entirely free of permanent microplastics. It is non-toxic, eco-friendly, and dishwasher-safe. When I saw it, I ordered three in white on the spot. After weeks of daily use, they have proven perfect. They hold up beautifully, clean easily, and most importantly, they are made from plants and minerals, not plastic. Proof that eco can be elegant, the MK Free Board marries design, performance, and sustainability. Fingers crossed the only cutting boards I will ever buy in the future will be more of these.

  • I've been using my Material Kitchen cutting boards for years and they are high quality, in great condition, and a consistent staple in everyday cooking. I trust the brand to create useful and well designed tools and would like to try more of their products.

  • Excited to have made my first purchase from Material. Known for their high quality kitchen goods, I grabbed their Coated Pan for Mother’s Day. While pricey, I could tell it would last a lifetime as I took it out of the box. It cooks very evenly thanks to the copper core but is still very easy to clean and maintain due to the beautifully colored coating. I also appreciate that it’s PFOAs free! I will definitely invest in more Material products in the future.
