  • Discovering Mamahuhu (the little brother to Mister Jiu's of the same famed chef Brandon Jew) was that kind of happy accident that one never expects to happen on a gloomy Friday evening in NorCal. Having grown up in Asia and a lifelong vegetarian, I was prepared for decent but not AMAZING Chinese fare (such are the concessions you make when homesickness hits). On one of my many orders since discovering this place — the second happy accident occurred as I took a chance and ordered their tofu & mushroom potstickers. Delicate wrappers, filled to the brim with a lovely textured stuffing (not mushy!! cleanly minced) — the potstickers, admittedly looked like any other when you take them out of the cheerful packaging. The choice of using rice/oat wrappers becomes evident as you pick them up before panfrying— the wrappers do become ever so slightly sticky, so don't leave them out on your counter while you prep the pan for panfrying (note: these are microwaveable, but the effort to panfry is WORTH IT). The potstickers themselves tasted lovely— luscious tofu shreds & mushroom filling hold up well against the crunchy wrapper of the potsticker. The filling itself was well salted, so skip the soy sauce in favour of chili crisp. Price-wise: You get approx. 8-10 pieces/pack of 11.99$ , which seems reasonable for a gluten-free option. Local SF orders are at an advantage with pickup options available across the city (though 8-pack orders get free shipping). Run, don't walk to get these little parcels of abundant deliciousness.

What is MAMAHUHU?

MAMAHUHU offers Chinese-American dishes with locally sourced ingredients

In their own words

Classic Chinese-American, thoughtful ingredients. Founded in 2017 by Michelin-starred Chef Brandon Jew (of Mister Jiu's), Anmao Sun, and Ben Moore (of Shanghai's Hunter Gatherer), Mamahuhu is devoted to cooking Chinese-American dishes from scratch with organically grown local produce and transparently raised animals. We believe that the choices we make about the things we eat, where ingredients come from and how dishes are prepared, have a direct and deeply-felt impact on the health of individuals and our communities. In September 2023 we launched out first packaged product - chef-crafted, gluten-free potstickers made with high quality ingredients and full of flavor. Available for shipping throughout California now.
