Hair Story wins passionate reviews for New Wash delivering softer, shinier, less-frizzy hair and encouraging fewer washes, yet feedback splits on performance: some report weighed-down, greasy roots and buildup, especially with curls or heavy styling. Strengths include a spa-like scent, creamy co-wash texture, and effective scalp massager, while weaknesses span labor-intensive application, awkward refill packaging and pumps, polarizing Powder’s gritty texture, and the Deep version’s rancid smell and poor results.

  • Started using this after my hairdresser began carrying it. Love the original cleanser. The DEEP version is not worth anyone’s time. Smells awful, rancid, and I’m sure it’s due to the apple cider vinegar. My hairdresser doesn’t find it effective either. I had written in a feedback email to them regarding this experience; they were quite sassy back. Replaced my purchase with the original formula, but in a much smaller oz. delivery…? Bummer. Now I stay purchasing the original through ebay or mercari. Too expensive straight off the site. Powder offers insane texture— obsessed. Hair Balm offers such a balanced hold. Undressed is nice, but I’d put the other two products first in terms of noticeable results. Love the refillable option. Be sure to know how to recycle the pouches— otherwise, what’s the point? They don’t always provide recycling instructions on the pouch. The bottles dent easily but that’s ok. Won’t break in your shower. I haven’t been able to use any replacement pump successfully yet, as I don’t like the ones provided. The 32 oz. bottle in particular has a pump with lots of crevices. It catches product… and mold. Which is visible. It’s white plastic. Overall I do love New Wash: Original. I’m a lazy girl, I love using one product. Be sure to take your time and really massage it thoroughly each time you cleanse. Read up on how the product works and the science behind it— it provides a good understanding of how to use it accordingly.

  • I have tried Hairstory three times over the last handful of years, each time hoping the problem was me. Maybe I was using too much? Too little? Not scrubbing enough? Not rinsing enough? All I know is that the alleged “magic” of this stuff is that it weighs down your hair, making it feel like day five hair on day one. I have naturally curly, medium thickness hair that I also wear straight. I can only assume Hairstory is for a very specific hair type — fine, flat, who knows — just not mine. In terms of accompanying products, the Balm is ok but the Powder is gross and makes my hair sticky and feel even dirtier. I’m so confused at the raves this brand gets! I rarely write reviews but figured there must be other folks like me out there thinking they’re the problem. No girl. Hairstory is the problem.

  • Wowie New Wash is a life changing product. This great smelling cleanser has entirely replaced shampoo and conditioner in my shower, and I happily use it twice a week. My hair feels clean and soft and looks the same every day, which is probably my main goal hairwise. I’m also completely addicted to the hair oil, which I apply to my ends when my hair is dry. It’s the best smelling product ever. I would use it as a full body moisturizer for the scent. I love receiving my New Wash as a subscription and not worrying about having to order more. Everyone in my house, including my 1 year old, happily uses New Wash.
