In their own words
In the summer of 2010, Leslie Kielson and her wife took a 7 day bike trip through northern VT. In search of an energy bar that wasn't loaded with sugar, Leslie decided to experiment with different ingredients, including healthier, natural sweeteners like maple syrup, to create a healthier alternative for their trip. While making their way through Vermont’s beautiful roads, they saw for themselves just how much better they performed and felt eating these homemade energy bars and were amazed at how just a small amount powered them up the many Vermont hills! After testing her creation on friends and family, Battenkill Brittle was born. Since then, she has added other nutritious products, all gluten-free tested, all low-sugar and all delicious! Her “facility” is a small commercial kitchen in the basement of their solar-powered log house. All her products are made and packaged almost entirely by hand. Leslie does all the baking with the help of two assistants. Leslie is extremely committed to doing the least amount of harm to our planet as possible. To meet this commitment, she runs their operation on solar power and is virtually zero waste: they produce less than 2 pounds of garbage a week! Everything else gets reused, composted, or recycled: seed bags become packaging material, plastic bags get recycled or reused, carboard boxes get reused for shipping, and five-gallon pails get donated to local farms.
