Proxies non-alcoholic wines have received mixed reviews. While the brand has been praised for its marketing efforts and appeal to non-drinkers, many customers criticized the taste, likening it to bad kombucha or a poor mix of ingredients. Customer service and return policies have also been called into question.
AI summary based on Thingtesting reviews
As someone who does not drink, I enjoy Proxies for evenings shared with guests or elevating a homemade dinner with my partner. In terms of a comparison to wine. I do not think this product tastes anything like wine, it lives somewhere closer to a fancy punch. I enjoy it enough, however, that I ordered 10 bottles for my wedding in 2022, as many of the guests were also non-drinkers.
One of the best out there - I truly enjoy this wine alternative and the cute and clever branding just makes it that much more fun to sub alcohol for.
A few friends and I split a bottle of "Blanc Sheep" from the Proxies brand last night. I can't say it tasted like any wine I've had before, and had a confusing flavor at first (we compared it to broth and tea before deciding it actually tasted just like Smarties), but definitely grew on us. I would be interested in trying more Proxies because the flavors are really complex and interesting.

Based on the bottle I tried, I felt the flavor was more similar to tea (a good, upscale tea) than wine. I am an Acid League fan and am excited to try more Proxies and explore additional flavors. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a new NA option to try.

Smells like moldy kombucha and tastes like kombucha and kool aid. My wife and I had to pinch our nose to drink the Red Clay. Site also misleadingly does not clearly state a “no returns” policy for any unopened product. Misleading reviews on site as well. I contacted the CEO directly and he couldn’t give me a straight answer as to why they don’t clearly state their return policy.

Out of the case of four I dumped in the sink two of the bottles as they were completely undrinkable. Two were consumed just of pure greed for the money spent. Stay away from this. For $25 a bottle they could have added some bitters and stuff for a complex aroma.. This purchase of $118 is incredibly disappointing...

I got “Red ember” from a local store.. so glad i didn’t buy a whole case. I’d explored their website before and been inclined to order based on all the 5 star reviews. After trying it, I had to double check their website, because this doesn’t deserve anywhere close to 5 stars. If you go in expecting kombucha, you won’t be disappointed. Unsure how they can charge so much for cloudy juice. It even hurt my stomach a bit. 5/5 for their marketing team though….

I got a variety set and each one was terrible in its own way. I didn’t expect them to taste exactly like wine (especially the “champagne” substitute) but honestly I could’ve just had seltzer in a stem glass. I’d prefer no flavor at all to these. The color is murky and the flavors are heavy and really unpleasant. I can’t imagine what foods they think this would pair with. The red wine actually gave my husband stomach issues. Not good.

Undrinkable: tried 6 different bottles and all were terrible and had to be poured out. So disappointing. Do not buy this product if you like wine. I feel duped by a clever instagram campaign.

I really wanted to enjoy Proxies, but after buying 6 different bottles of a mix of red, rose and white wines I am entirely disappointed and feel as though I wasted my money. Not only were they not good to drink, but actually smelt and tasted like they had gone bad and was not enjoyable to drink. I'll have to admit the white ones are drinkable when you toss a little sparkling water or frozen fruit in the mix, however not worth the high price. The reds - holly molly - I tried everything - the pairings, letting it breathe, asking others to drink it, and it just tasted like watered down rancid beet juice. The smell is awful too. They are doing great for marketing, clearly, I was convinced to buy a case, but they are sitting in my fridge and not drinkable in my eyes. Save your money, and make yourself some yummy mocktails at home. I also tried to reach out to Proxies to let them know about this experience (in case it was a bad batch, or something happened during shipping), and the best they could offer was a 20% discount on future offers, which after trying 6 different bottles is not the direction I'll go.

Attractive marketing but it's impossible to finish your drink. There were 5 people at the table and everyone agreed: undrinkable. It looks like we mixed herbal tea, kombucha and kool-aid together. Can't call this a "good alternative to wine".

I am so disappointed in the product. I purchased 6 bottles and the taste is simply horrible. If I'd want to describe it, I would say it taste like a very off sour- bitter juice. It does not taste like kombucha, (edible) juice and certainly not like wine. I tried 3 sips, but I threw away the rest of the bottle. I want to stress that this is not a personal taste question: it really is just disgusting. All these 5 stars reviews are very obviously fake, that I am sure of. And to finish, I emailed Proxies to have at least a partial refund. All they suggest is a discount on my next order... This company is trying their best to sell their products and they will for sure disapear...

Great marketing done by this company with a terrible product. From the Instagram commercials claiming Sommelier’s enjoy Proxies with different food pairings, I was intrigued. I tried to keep my expectations low, however these non-alcoholic wines are far from tasting like wine. They taste like bad kombucha. I have been very disappointed with this order. I’ve never written a review before but felt I had to with this terrible experience.

Was really excited about this brand. Tried 4 of the wines, the Rich and spicy red was so bad I didn't finish the glass. Overall, waste of money. Dissapointed.

Purchased 8 bottles to give this company and its products a thorough try. I was really hoping this would be a nice alternative to wine. We got together with friends and had an evening to try the products. I can only say this company does an incredible job of marketing and pulling in chefs to endorse the product. We all opened bottles and sampled the product together. I could go into detail, but to keep it short, the glasses and remaining bottles were poured down the sink, no one in the group could drink the product. So beware, if you want to try it, pay the higher cost and sample a single bottle to start. I very rarely right a review, but sometimes I feel I need to make people aware before spending their money.

Was excited about the idea of this product, and the hype added to that. However, a very disappointed with the experience. I purchased the starter case and opened the Red Clay. I could barely get past the “nose” on this beverage to try a sip. I am not even sure how to describe the experience, but I poured the rest of the glass and the rest of the bottle down the drain. If you are trying to even come close to the experience of drinking wine, do not purchase this product. And furthermore, even taking the product for what it is (not wine) it does not deliver and palatable taste. I would not recommend. How do I go about returning the other three bottles for a refund?

Super disappointed in all four Proxies that I purchased. All four of them had subtle and slightly off putting flavours. The packaging, advertising and price would leave you to believe that you are about to indulge in a wonderful product however they all tasted like watered down slightly sour tea. Definitely wouldn't recommend.

As someone who does not drink alcohol, I'm always on the hunt for creative drinks. I had the opportunity to try the Pastiche flavor and it was fantastic. It's a creative blend of flavors that paired nicely with my meal.

I wish I could find this product in more stores and on menus at restaurants.

Absolutely love proxies. I look forward to a glass of this so much more than even wine. So good. Totally feel special when poured in a stemmed wine glass. Really helping me cut down on my weekday drinking.

Start with one of the mixed packs! That way you can figure out what you like before committing to a 4-pack.
