Cool people doing cool things:
Meet Sarah and Alexa of Loveys
As a pre-Mother's Day celebration, I thought it would be fun to chat with the two women transforming how a new generation of parents purchase and recycle.
Sarah and Alexa are the co-founders of Loveys, a new resale marketplace for premium baby gear. We discussed building Loveys, who they look to for inspiration, and a few mothers who have impacted their lives for the better.
COOL PEOPLE DOING COOL THINGS 🍼
Hi Sarah and Alexa! Introduce yourselves to the readers.
Hey there! We’re the co-founders of Loveys, a new resale marketplace for premium baby gear. We’ve been close friends since our early college days at the University of Southern California and serendipitously became co-workers at CASE Agency, working in consumer marketing for brands across the beauty, lifestyle, and wellness sectors. With a shared passion for shopping sustainably, accessible luxury, and female-centric businesses, we came together to build our brainchild, Loveys. A little bit more on each of us below!
Alexa:
I’m an LA baby, but NY lady as I like to say, having been born and raised in Los Angeles, but residing on the east coast for 7 years now. I recently earned my MBA from Wharton where I focused on early-stage consumer investing and entrepreneurship. My favorite Lovey growing up? My stuffed animal, Mr. Bear.
Sarah:
I was born and raised in the midwest, but have made my way to living on both coasts. I graduated from USC’s Iovine and Young Academy which is a hybrid of design, technology, and entrepreneurship. My favorite Lovey growing up? My cozy blankie.
Tell me about Loveys!
Loveys is still a baby (no pun intended!) and launched only a few weeks ago. The inspiration for Loveys was a fusion of two things: 1) our personal commitment to supporting the growth of the circular economy and 2) our experience watching siblings and family / friends close to us face large startup costs as new parents—we recognized their desire to access the best brands and products for their kids, while also their frustration when faced with the challenge of trying to get rid of items that were quickly outgrown and only used for a finite period.
As aspiring parents, Loveys is the result of this passion and pain point coming together to ultimately help transform the way a new generation of parents purchase and recycle.
What's a brand you’ve recently tested?
Similar to the ethos behind Thingtesting, it feels like Loveys is a place to buy quality pieces more thoughtfully. Does that resonate?
Absolutely! Our intention with Loveys is to provide a reliable and elevated experience to both make it easier for parents to source top-rated baby gear on a budget and help them more seamlessly move through items their babies quickly outgrow and no longer need. Most baby gear is only used for a short period of time, and items that parents are ready to move on from are often still in great condition, making the category ripe for disruption with resale.
Since our early days ideating on what we dreamed of Loveys being, we wanted the platform to feel aspirational in a really cool way. We kept saying we envisioned it to be the “smarter, better, elevated way of having what you need for your baby.”
Mother’s Day is approaching! Who are some mothers that have made an impact on your life?
Alexa:
My mom and two older sisters have had an incredibly strong impact in shaping who I am and continue to aspire to become. They are my ultimate cheerleaders, and I have always admired each of their inherent strength and warmth. From them, I have learned the beauty in our ability to continually grow and evolve as individuals. If I can be half the mother that each of them is one day, I will have surely done something right.
Sarah:
Echoing Alexa’s sentiments, my mom has been my biggest supporter throughout my life. She’s also the #1 fan of Loveys, telling anyone and everyone she knows about us. It’s also been very timely to bring Loveys into the world as my older sister prepares for the birth of her first baby. Both of us are avid resale shoppers, so she’s eagerly waiting for Loveys to make it to my hometown of Kansas City.
What else is in your current rotation? (i.e. a hangout spot, a hobby, anything!)
Alexa:
What I love about living in New York is being able to walk endlessly, with my favorite walking route of the moment being along the Brooklyn Heights Promenade (with a stop at L’Appartement 4F for a tahini chocolate chip cookie). I’m not a coffee drinker, but am a tea fanatic - with it finally getting warmer in New York, I’m also frequenting Olive’s in Soho for my favorite Arnold Palmer.
Sarah:
Lately, I’ve been channeling my inner-child. I started taking adult beginner ballet classes at the Joffrey Ballet in West Village. I also loved my experience watercoloring and painting pottery at Happy Medium in Greenpoint.
Who are some spotters in your community that you look to for new things?
