A Guide to Thingtesting Reviews

As we move into Week 2 of the 24 Days of Thingdrop, more featured brands are offering rewards to users at Level 4. Previous Level 4 Thingdrops have spotlighted popular brands like Vuori activewear and East Fork pottery. Getting to this stage requires gaining 3500 points, which means writing more reviews. Here is a list of tips for success to support you on your Thingtesting review journey.

1. Set Up A Profile

First, make sure you have an account with Thingtesting. All of your reviews and brand lists will be consolidated into one place on your profile. As you explore products in the Thingtesting database, three handy lists you might use to track your activity are “Brands I have spotted,” “Brands I have tested,” and “Brands I want to test.” Choosing something from your “Brands I have tested” list is a fantastic way to write your first review.

2. Write a Review

Write reviews in batches. Pick a few favorite products from your "Brands I have tested" list and write them in one sitting.

To write a review, search for the Thingtesting page of the brand you wish to comment on, and click “Write a review” in the right-hand menu bar. Fill out the questions that populate in the review form: your overall rating, the specific product you are reviewing, your experience with the product, relevant descriptive tags, a photo, how likely you are to recommend the brand to a friend, and any existing relationship you have with the brand.

If you ever get stuck in the review editor, you can see live reviews from other Thingtesters as you write. It is very helpful to look to others for inspiration when writing your own. Sylvanna, for example, does a great job of understanding and including the broader cultural context of selecting a personal scent in her review for Glossier's "You" perfume. Like, comment, and share other Thingtesters’ reviews, especially if you found them beneficial.

When writing your review, including a colorful narrative about you and the product is extremely beneficial for other Thingtesters’ browsing. Why does this product speak to you, and what should others know?

Click “submit,” and you are done writing!

3. Gain Points

For each review contributed to the Thingtesting community, you will gain points. A high-quality review can earn 115 points if it is above 200 characters long and includes a photo of the product in question.

Say you sat down and wrote 5 high-quality reviews in one sitting, you would gain 575 points!

4. Level Up

As you gain points from writing reviews, you will progress through levels. Earn 1000 points to reach Level 1, 1500 for Level 2, and so on. After becoming a review-writing master, you can reach Level 10 at 50,000 points. While each level unlocks bonus rewards (you get a Thingtesting-branded Nalgene bottle at Level 3), the biggest payoff from climbing levels is gaining access to Thingdrops.

5. Unlock Thingdrops

Every week, Thingtesting features rewards with three brands in a Thingdrop. To qualify for these rewards, you must be of a certain Level. For example, there might be a 50% reward for Dirty Labs that is only available to Thingtesters at Level 2 or above.

To earn rewards, travel to the featured brand's website via the Thingtesting link and make a purchase. Once you receive your purchase, post a quality review for the product. Your Thingdrop purchase and review process will be verified, and your reward will be redeemable under your profile in "My Rewards."

This holiday season, Thingtesting is featuring one Thingdrop every day, advent-calendar style. Check out upcoming brand rewards here.

6. Tips for Writing Success

Incorporate your voice. Crack a joke. Pretend you are texting a friend. This is how the most honest reviews are written. A great review is warm, conversational, and easy to read. Your fellow Thingtesters will thank you!
