  • I had to transition from clumping clay litter because I had three cats, two of them diabetic. Because their urine was both plentiful and sticky, the litter got embedded in their paws and then got tracked everywhere. Their plastic boxes never looked or smelled clean, even after being scrubbed. I took a chance on stainless steel boxes after reading that they were more sanitary, and on using pellets to solve the nasty paws and tracking problems caused by the clay litter. Furrbby seemed to have a good reputation and good reviews, and seemed well worth the investment. I ordered the largest box and an open enclosure to keep "the kicker cat" from throwing pellets everywhere. The order came with liners for the lower box, a scoop, and six pounds of pellet litter. There were also six non-skid adhesive pads. The one drawback was that the order took almost a month to arrive; after three weeks I emailed the company and they responded quickly with an apology and an estimated delivery date. When it arrived, it took less than ten minutes to set up. Since my cats weren't used to pellets, I put disposable pee pads on top of them, then gradually cut them into smaller pieces until the cats were using the new box exclusively. It was an easy transition for them and I just scoop out the solids. The urine makes the pellets dissolve into dust that I stir through the grate and into the liner in the bottom pan. The liners are optional (and expensive) but I use them because my cats pee so much, and it is easier to dispose of the liner every week or so instead of carrying the whole pan to the dumpster then emptying and washing it. I use generic pet store pellets to replenish the litter box as needed. Using a sifting stainless steel litter box is a big improvement over clumping clay litter and plastic boxes. The pellets don't get tracked everywhere, the cats' paws aren't disgusting anymore, and as long as I scoop the poop as soon as possible, odor isn't a problem.
